Lighting Strike Twice on both of  my Leica S cameras the sensors have cracked spontaneously.

 

Last year early 2017 my Leica S2 sensor cracked spontaneously in my climate controlled condition It was sent to Leica Germany it was fixed for free. 

 

In Nov 2017. I have the opportunity to acquire a mint condition Leica from a friend .

He bought the camera new . My friend found that the screen was not working while under warranty he sent it Germany. Leica also discovered that there are spots on the sensor and replaced the sensor in 2016. The camera has less than 500 actuation, 

 

I discover the crack after 2 weeks . I send it to Germany . This time they insisted on charging me on labour.

 

That is my experience on my 2 Leica S cameras, I have more pain than enjoyment

(a) For the CCD sensor S cameras, is there a “policy” with regards to how Leica handles a corroded sensor? I understand there is a fixed fee these days to replace a corroded sensor on the M9 .... but for the S2 / 006?

 

(b ) I guess it’s partly dependent on the answer to the above, but is there a different process to have an S2 / 006 sensor replaced “pre-emptively” before corrosion has occurred?

 

(c ) same sort of question for the S lens’ motor failure ....ie, what is the cost (if any) to have a lens repaired if a motor has broken, and what is the cost if you want it changed pre-emptively?

John I am not aware of a common problem with S sensors. Well the numbers in service in comparison to the M system are tiny of course. I haven’t heard of anyone preemptively getting an S sensor replaced but why not contact Customer service to see if they could give you an estimate?An S2 is potentially quite ‘old’ in digital camera terms. Given the lower residual value on the older camera I suspect that might not be financially the best idea?

FWIW mine is third hand and fine. Wetzlar actually inspected , cleaned and adjusted it for free when I mistakenly thought there was a problem with memory cards. It’s just a spare now that I use the S (typ 007).

For the S lens AF drive defect, I am not aware if anyone has sent a lens out of the five year window for repair as yet?

I think I saw an estimate of USD 400 cost for the preemptive service?. It will be in that thread. Before my 120s 5th birthday I will most likely send it if the fault has not surfaced. I have 10s of thousands of exposures made with that too.. My 70 was repaired very quickly and for free when the defect appeared at 3 Years 20,000 exposures

Sad news...

Even though the second camera had five hundred actuations, it is old and who knows how well it was stored...

Still, Leica could have repaired it for free but at least you got a free sensor..

Leica SL's your only choice if you want to use the S lens.

 

Alternatively, if you still want to stick with crop MF format, then Hassy X1D or Fuji GFX, I prefer GFX. Hassy's hexagonal bokeh turns me off.

I agree with what you're saying (and not only in this post). By the way, I believe one can adapt Leica S lenses to GFX using a Fotodiox adapter (manual focus only, though)

Not sure, as I don't own it. But Zeiss ZE lenses for a Canon mount have no manual aperture either, and you have to shoot them wide open on GFX. I guess it's the same here.

Like I have said before, I think S protocol for its lens control is proprietary and since the market is so small, nobody bother to crack it.... or maybe it's copyright... I once talked to Andrea Oldani from Alpa about adapting S lens on Alpa FPS as an opportunity to use only 1 lens system for both street shooting and landscape photography tools... 

 

He told me that Leica will not release the protocol for other manufacturer to do 'accessories' for their lens system... hence not possible to get any proper support on choosing aperture or even make use of the CS. Whereas FPS has a shift adaptor for both Contax 645 and Hassy H and even Rollei....

 

I guess Leica want to protect Sinar.

 

You can only shoot wide open with this fotodiox adaptor or you use the DoF preview button pressed and removed lens technique to get to the aperture you want... only useful for wide angle lens for landscape work....

Yup, had no doubt about the Leica's approach on that. It's interesting how different companies have different market strategies. Leica doesn't let others use their lenses, Phase One doesn't let anyone else to use Capture One, and some others like Fuji (or Sony for 35mm systems) go with tons of adapters to be used on their cameras.

P1 just don't allow MF to use C1, other 135 system is still supported...

interesting to read this part. Seems to be a very common problem that the leather covering loosens. In my case (007) this happened already after half a year. Really turns me off to see this sloppy quality .. and even more knowing that this already happened with S2 and 006.

Actually, the Hassy hexagonal bokeh "problem" (especially visible with the 90mm lens) has been solved a while ago with a firmware update.

Right, only "fixed" at f 3.2.

 

And indeed, I personally prefer the hexagonal shape, but seem to be in the minority here. But Hasselblad leaves it to the photographer to choose (in the menu), which way he or she wants it.

ECO glue, my favorite! They might as well use their saliva to glue the thing...
