Does it have the Mandler “glow” like the 75 lux? I have the Apo version but am thinking of going to the v5 for a slightly gentler and more characterful rendering. I love the way certain Mandler lenses draw for portraits, especially the glow they create wide open. I have found the 50 Apo to be very sterile.

It has exaclty the right size on the M10. As mdemeyer pointed out, it's only minus is a propensity to flare, but then again, so does the APO ( I know, I had one, supposedly the non-flare version. It flared like crazy). The Summilux 50 ASPH is the most flare resistant Leica lens, but I have a brass version that I find too heavy on the M10, so I keep it on the MP and take the Summicron instead on the M10. It is very sharp, but with a slightly lower contrast than the Summilux (and, of course, the APO): I find this feature very appealing on a digital sensor

I have the v5 50mm Summicron M lens. It's the 50 Jahre anniversary version, it lacks the focus tab, and is styled similar to the old 50mm Summicron 'rigid'. Optically it's identical to any other 50mm Summicron from 1979 onwards.

It's incredibly sharp. It's light and compact. I think it's a gem of a lens. I use it when I don't need the extra stop of the 50mm Summilux ASPH, or can't be bothered with the weight of its brass barrel.

I know that the APO version is supposed to be even sharper, with smoother out of focus areas. But a new one of those costs eight times as much as a mint used non-APO version. I do like that Leica will aim for the stars, and make lenses like the 50mm Summicron APO though.

Anyway, the v5 50mm Summicron is more than enough for me. I wouldn't ever sell mine.

A few shots around where I live, with the 50mm Summicron v5 50 Jahre (+ M Monochrom mk1) in the recent cold weather.

I love this

It doesn’t. The f/1 is an niche specialist lens whereas the lovely summicron is a standard lens, for all purposes.

I use my f/1.0 Noctilux as an all around 50mm lens.  It's big and heavy compared to most Leica M and/or Voigtländer M mount lenses but it gets the job done regardless.  I am planning on getting a 50mm Summicron or Summarit to be my all around 50 sometime soon, though.  Sometimes light and fast is nice.

I have found the f/1.0 Noctilux to be eminently capable and useful.  Weight/size aside, it is far from a one trick pony or a niche lens in my experience.

Sorry to add to an old thread in the forum but this seemed to be an appropriate place, even though I’m an SL user.

Anyway, I recently bought the 50mm Summicron-M v5 to use on my SL2-s. It’s brilliant. I’d tried one a few years ago on my M262 (on loan from the Leica Store in Manchester, UK, while waiting for a 35mm to arrive). I liked it but I couldn’t afford both, so back it went.

These days I do have a few Sigma i-Contemporary primes and the Leica Vario Elmarit  24-70 for the SL2-s; each one a lovely lens in its own right, but I bought the camera with the intention of using M lenses on it as well.

Since I bought the Summicron-M it hasn’t come off the camera. It’s beautiful to use - obviously, because it’s a Leica M lens - but the sort of gentle, organic look to some of the results when I use the light properly can be absolutely lovely. I’ve no idea if it’s due to the Mandler design, if it’s because it lends itself well to the SL2-s sensor, or what to be honest, but I’m really happy to be using one again. And it’s certainly sharp. Clearly, I’m reminded of why I was so impressed when I used it on the M262.

There’s a reason why punters keep buying this older Mandler lens and why Leica keep producing it. Leica SL Apo primes are, I’ve heard, on another optical level - but they are different and modern (they don’t have an aperture ring for one thing. Unforgivable 😆).  The versatility of the SL2-s - and particularly the way it’s designed to take M lenses - is partly why I bought the camera in the first place. Leica M lenses are special and, for me, this old school 50mm Summicron is perfect on it.

A Happy New Year to all.

Thanks for resurrecting this old thread. I would love to see more photos from this lens collected in one place.
