rsolomon Posted January 21, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) i am a new user to C1 and am organizing my photos. i have created a keyword list with parent and child relationships that works well for me , for example: Sports > Cars > Hardtop , Sports > Cars > Convertibles etc my questions is : When i apply the keywords to an image file i notice the metadata does NOT get updated ? or i cant see the updated fields ? i understand i can create a preset to update the metadata using my keywords as a separate function, if i do this any guidance on which fields to use/update in the metadata ? Should i stack keywords within one field ? should i use multiple fields (example above would need 3 fields) what i'm trying to accomplish... i often go back and want to view by keywords,,, sports or cars or hardtop i would like the keywords to be independent of the software tool i'm using - one day i will either move on from C1, or C1 will go away, or whatever, so I would like these keywords embedded into the metadata for future flexibility Thanks in advance for any guidance Rich
Advertisement Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Hi rsolomon, Take a look here Capture one keywords and metadata. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Tom R Posted January 22, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) I'm not sure what you mean by the keywords not being reflected/updated in the metadata? Try exposing the "Keywords" window which is different from the "Metadata" window from the View Menu. I use structured keywords (but less so lately) and have always found that C1 manages these within the Capture One product line as text based data/files ... meaning that these could be exported, etc. as text files. You might have some problems with how hierarchical keywords might appear with LightRoom, for example; I'm not sure that LR uses the "<" symbols ... . Regarding your questions re: "stacking"keywords .... I found that hierarchical keywords schemes are NOT as useful as one might think ... largely because the filtering engine that C1 uses doesn't easily allow for "disjunctions" (or logic) but, instead, defers to "conjunctive" logic when combining keywords, etc. in searching. For what it's worth, if filtering is central to your workflow, you might consider purchasing PhotoMechanic and learning how to use the many metadata fields that are designed to be used by large organizations to organize and sort large numbers of images. But, PM is NOT free .... it's another $150--money well spent if you really want to attach meaningful metadata to large numbers of images. rsolomon Posted January 22, 2018 Author Share #3 Posted January 22, 2018 Thanks, Keywords, searching and finding is all working fine in C1. My question is whether these keywords are placed into the metadata or jthe catalog. The reason for my question is a future concern, if I move away from C1 to a new tool or C1 goes away will I need to reorganize my photos again. if the keywords "live" in the metadata a new tool can take that info and allow my (existing) keywords to be utilized if the keywords "live" in the catalog a new tool will NOT be able to take that info and I will need to reorganize all over again.
