Paulus Posted January 14, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am planning a meeting in Nijmegen in the beginning /middle / end of June, . possible dates: 9th, 16th or 30th of June. Nijmegen is one of the oldest cities of the Netherlands and possibly Europe. There are remains of the Village some 11000 years b.c. In the Roman era it was know already as Oppidum Batavorum History of Nijmegen you can find here: http://www.ru.nl/english/@676086/history/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nijmegen The city is also know from " Operation Market Garden " . WWII. In recent years, Nijmegen has illustrated how the Netherlands try to deal with the rising water in the main rivers coming from France and Germany. The waterworks near Nijmegen are a very nice area to stroll around the river, not so far from town. photos shot yesterday evening: https://pauljoostenfotograaf.smugmug.com/Architecture/Nijmegen/n-GmSx32/ The program will be: 10;30 Meeting near the station. Walk into the town to the Market where there will be a Market. Seeing the Oldest Cafee of the Netherlands ( they claim...) : https://indeblaauwehand.nl and trying some of their famous meatball as lunch. Visiting the Valkhof Museumin the afternoon for an hour or so: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museum_Het_Valkhof Walking over the bridge ( don't complain about the distance, in WWII the allied forces had to row across..) Having some drinks on the Island. " Veur Lent ". at Cafe Waalzicht: https://www.cafewaalzicht.nl Walking a 500m further to Railway station "Nijmegen Lent" on the Bridge and driving back to the Central station by train. Optional dinner in de vicinity by the Railway station or if we really like, drive by bus/taxi to one of the most charming Hotels of the Netherlands near the Ooijpolder: https://pauljoostenfotograaf.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Nijmegen-Ooij-Persingen/n-zHbwq/ Hotel restaurant Oortjeshekken, you can also sleep here: it's great! : http://oortjeshekken.mign.nl

Gobert Posted January 14, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2018 Great idea. Nijmegen is very photogenetic. In case of good weather, you can spend several days there and then I’m not referring to the huge number of pubs and bars. The topic title says July, but it should read June? First I thought of the 7 of Juli, but I can't myself so it will be June.

farnz Posted January 14, 2018 Share #8 Posted January 14, 2018 Thank you for organising this, Paulus. Any of the proposed dates are fine with me at the moment. For a 'non-Nederlander' how should I pronounce "Nijmegen" please? 1. "Nidg-megan" 2. "Nigh-megan" 3. "Nigh-meyun" 4. "Ny-slurrr-en" 5. Something else completely? Pete.

Paulus Posted January 15, 2018 Author Share #11 Posted January 15, 2018 Thank you for organising this, Paulus. Any of the proposed dates are fine with me at the moment. I think, English-> Dutch pronunciation should be: Neyyyygh-May-ghun. But the Nijmegen -inhabitants say it differently...

Paulus Posted January 17, 2018 Author Share #20 Posted January 17, 2018 (edited) The program uptill now will/might be: 10;30 Meeting near the station. I Have reserved for 20 persons in Cafe van Buren: Café van Buren Molenstraat 89 6511 HB Nijmegen We have “windowseats” there or we go on the terras if the weather allows. 11:30 We might peak in the “Vereniging “ the concert building nearby ( still negotiating ) where there is a reconstruction at the time. The concert building is renowned with musicians for its great acoustics resembling the famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, but smaller. https://www.stadsschouwburgendevereeniging.nl/zakelijk/Concertzaal/ Walk into the town to the Market where there will be a Market. 13:30/14:00 somewhere lunch , still have to find something in this busy city. We can opt for the best French Fries in the city and far beyond at: Patathuisje Piccolino Lange Hezelstraat 23, 6511 CB Nijmegen, or try to find an alternative. 15:00/15:30: Visiting the Valkhof + Museum in the afternoon for an hour or so depending on the weather: https://nl.wikipedia...eum_Het_Valkhof https://www.museumhetvalkhof.nl 16:30/17:00 Walking over the bridge (don't complain about the distance, in WWII the allied forces had to row across..) Having some drinks on the Island. " Veur Lent ". at Cafe Waalzicht: This Island is recently made ( They dug away a huge pile of sand, to give more room for the river and its rising water. ) I’m taking an old cart with me to show what has changed. https://www.cafewaalzicht.nl Walking a 500m further to Railway station "Nijmegen Lent" on the Bridge and driving back to the Central station by train. ( leaving every 15 minutes. 17/18:09-:25-:39-:55 ) 19:15/30 Dinner at: “De Kazerne” in the evening. It's in the city only 2 kilometers from the central station. http://www.indekazerne.nl/contact/ Edited January 17, 2018 by Paulus
