I have recently got back to Leica M 240. I previously have a multifunction grip on my old 240 but I have forgotten how the GPS perform. I have heard that they are not that accurate and should not even be bother with...

Am I assume that it is the case or it's not anymore?

sorry for the weird question cause seems like I have had used this grip before but seems to have no clue as to the performance of the GPS.... i will be honest... I forgot to turn it on during my 1 year with the M240 last time around..... utter moron....

It works reasonable when you are on a free field with nothing masking the satellites, except the high information.

Unfortunately it can give you wrong positions with masking. For example under trees. I had in one case a position 3200 meters more east, a spot were I never was.

Also, when it lost connection to the satellites, depending on the firmware-version of the camera it will save the last position in the files up to one hour, what is crazy because you can be far away in one hour today. So I got a lot of files with a wrong position. In the last but two firmware this time was set to 10 minutes or so, what reduces this problem a bit, but then it was set to one hour again. So I stay with the old firmware therefor.

I also had problems, that the time-setting of the camera was changed with GPS on, altought I had chosen in the menu, that it shouldn't be changed.

Unfortunately Leica never took care of this problems.

It won't work in countries where GPS tracking is forbidden (e. g. China. there is a list in the manual).

My experience with GPS is based on living at a relatively northerly latitude. GPS seems to be less reliable the further north one goes. Don't ask me to explain why because when it comes to rocket or satellite science I have little or no knowledge. I have a golf 'watch' that is supposed to tell me how far I am from the front and back of the green. It can take 2 holes to locate a satellite signal. It is like that with the MFHG attached to M240-P, it fails to receive a signal most of the time.

In summary, a bit of a dead loss.  :(

If you have a small dedicated gps device which will run all day as a track logger then you will get better geotagging than the Leica one which is very slow to find satellites and often inaccurate. I use an old Garmin eTrex and Lightroom to add the location to the pictures.
