Hello all,

I am hoping someone can help me get this wireless trigger to work!

M-P240

SF 40 Flash

Yongnuo RF-602N

I have the transmitter on the M-P240 and the Receiver on the SF 40.

When you half press the transmitter button both the receiver and transmitter light green. When you full press, both light red. This tells me that they are communicating properly.

The flash is powered on and blinking green (works fine on camera). I have tried in SF, SD, A, M, TTL.

I have tried each setting on the flash with different combinations in camera. I have tried multiple speeds below 250.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Dustin

I do not know the Yongnuo RF-602N.   The units I have used all had a test button on the slave unit used to ensure the slave unit can trigger the attached flash.   Does the RF-602N have the same?  The other issue I've had on my Canon gear is that the flash will sometimes go to sleep and not trigger until I cycle power on the flash unit.

The transmitter has the test button and it triggers the receiver, which is attached to the flash. Something from the receiver to the flash doesn't seem to be triggering the flash.

I did try to turn the flash off and on a few times and unfortunately that didn't resolve the issue.

Maybe the SF40 can't be triggered wirelessly?

This won't help...... but since you got no other input.

My SF 40 Flash is in the shop ...so I couldn't test it. And I have not done any extensive work using use the Leica with the strobe SF 40 Flash ....frankly because it never worked long enough to play with or test off camera.

I have a set of cheap Pro master triggers for Nikon's. My triggers are specific to Nikon and only work on Manual.

I just did a test  with the triggers on the M240 with a Nikon SB800 set to manual......It worked fine.

The Nikon SB800 flash also works properly on manual with the M240 and no trigger.

Perhaps it SF 40 Flash is finicky or only works with whatever the proper Leica trigger configuration would be?
Up to now my experience with the Leica SF 40 flash is not very positive.

Maybe there is something on this old thread that may help?

I know this isn't the answer.......but at least we're listening ;-)

Thank you for the input. I will most likely try pocket wizard. I was being cheap because I RARELY use flash. However, I moved to Upstate NY recently and the winters are abysmal so I figured I would try to learn flash!

I didn't want to buy a bunch of lighting/flash gear until I spent some time playing around to see if I would enjoy. Silly considering I bought the Leica flash.

Sorry to hear about your SF40 :  (

Hopefully I will not have the same results.

Leica M9 or M240P both work very well on Standard Flash sync time  with the Canon Trigger/Receiver Version of Yongnuo 602 and any Flash on manual/ automatic Setting like Leica SF 58, Yongnuo 568 EXII or old Metz or Minolta flashes. This combination also works for old R6.2 /R 7or panasonic Version of Dlux5. TTL is not working.

For SF40 I cannot comment.

I’m very surprised by this. It’s normally the Nikon versions of hot shoe devices which are used on Leica.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello Dustin,

A couple weeks have passed since the last post.  Have you been able to resolve your problem?

I do not have SF40 flash.  As a result, I cannot comment specifically on SF40 flash.  However, I can provide you some general comments.

Here are a few steps that you can try:

First, check out your transmitter and receiver using a digital voltmeter

1. Make sure that your receiver and transmitter have fresh batteries

2. Press the test button on your transmitter while measuring the voltage on the pin on your receiver's hot shoe

Here are the voltage level between the middle pin and the metal rail:

1.  3 volts when test button is not pressed

2.  0 volt when test button is pressed

If the above procedure proves that your wireless trigger system works, then you can set your flash to manual mode.  Then, you can try to see if your  SF40 can be triggered.

Thanks Dennis! I gave up on the Yongnuo. Thats what I get for buying a $20 unit.

It obviously has potential to work but didn't for me.

Dustin,

Here are a few inexpensive ways of doing an off-camera flash.

Option #1:

1. Have your SF40 flash on your MP240

2. Buy another inexpensive flash which has a capability to be triggered optically (most flash this feature - my Nissin Di622 has this feature) - This flash will be triggered when your SF40 flashes.

Option #2:

1. Buy two PocketWizard Plus III's (or newer - I have two PW Plus IIIs)

2. Buy one PocketWizard-hot-shoe adapter (only if your flash gun/black does not have 3.5mm flash sync port)

Note that PW Plus III does not transmit TTL data from your camera

What I use for studio work (please note that I am an amateur)

1. One AlienBees B400 flask block

2. One Paul C Buff 22" Silver Beauty Dish

3. Two PW Plus III

4. One Nissin Di622 flash gun (in optical-triggering mode)

Have fun with your studio-work adventure,

Dennis
