Gobert Posted January 2, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 2, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) I’ve recently bought a M10. I’m wondering which method for Black/White pictures gives the best result. Converting DNG’s into B/W via post-processing (silver efex) or B/W directly out of the camera and improved by post-processing.
Advertisement Posted January 2, 2018 Posted January 2, 2018 Hi Gobert, Take a look here B/W via camera or via post-processing. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pico Posted January 2, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 2, 2018 (edited) IMHO, always start with color, then convert to B&W. The flexibility of color manipulation/renditions before conversion to B&W is profound. Edited January 2, 2018 by pico

zeitz Posted January 2, 2018 Share #4 Posted January 2, 2018 Converting to B & W in post-processing allows you at apply filters at the time of conversion. Shooting B & W in the camera requires that the filter be physically placed on the lens. The second approach is how Monochrome M users do it, put on the filter at the time the picture is taken.
Jeff S Posted January 3, 2018 Share #5 Posted January 3, 2018 More PP flexibility with color conversions. Possibly different mindset shooting with monochrome sensor, irrespective of IQ. Jeff
Ko.Fe. Posted January 3, 2018 Share #6 Posted January 3, 2018 Where are cameras which are good with in-camera BW. I like M9 "high" ISO JPEG1 BW. I like Q in camera BW. I think, BW appeal and preferences is very personal. I'm not fan of Monochrome BW of any kind I have seen so far. Why not to try it and see if you are going to like M10 in camera BW? Print from M-E in camera BW on the left and print from bw film scan on the right.
