RichardG Posted December 30, 2017 Share #1 Posted December 30, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, this post is mainly on behalf of my 91 year old Father-in-law who owns a 1954 M3, he is thinking of purchasing a Leica digital M series and wondered whether his existing M3 lenses will function on the new camera. Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you.
Advertisement Posted December 30, 2017 Posted December 30, 2017 Hi RichardG, Take a look here M3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 30, 2017 Share #2 Posted December 30, 2017 Yes, old lenses are fully compatible with new cameras with very few exceptions. He may need to have the lenses adjusted though, as the mechanical tolerance spans have narrowed, and he might want to have them coded (service offered both by Leica and third-party repair shops) for full digital functionality. I suppose that he is aware that digital photography involves a certain learning curve in postprocessing the images in a computer?
a.noctilux Posted December 30, 2017 Share #3 Posted December 30, 2017 If he is fortunate user of Dual Range Summicron 2/50, only one digital M would accept it , M10. The other digital M would only allow focus to 3-5 meters.
pico Posted December 30, 2017 Share #4 Posted December 30, 2017 (edited) At 91 years-old I seriously doubt he need worry about Jaap's advice. His vision is good enough. Edited December 30, 2017 by pico
Peter Kilmister Posted December 30, 2017 Share #5 Posted December 30, 2017 Good luck to anyone aged 91 who can handle a digital Leica M, and the post processing (the most important part of jaapv's advice). Some people at that age are unable to walk or think straight so it is delightful to hear of an exception. Do what ever you wish to do ... and have fun! Enjoy the remaining 20 or maybe more years of your life.
auceps Posted December 31, 2017 Share #6 Posted December 31, 2017 I am using my old (more than 50 years old) uncoded Summicrons and Tele-Elmarits on my M240. No problems and excellent results.
RichardG Posted December 31, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted December 31, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you for all your comments I will pass these on to him. He has been using digital for a number of years with his full frame Nikons so is aware of the post processing needed, yes his eyesight is good and he still produces good photographic images but would like to get back to the feel and handling of a Leica rangefinder such as the M10.
