mikeodial Posted December 29, 2017 Share #1 Posted December 29, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wondering if anyone has made this move. I am considering selling my XV to move to the higher quality of the Q without adding much weight or inconvenience. I must admit I like the flexibility of the XV zoom, but feel for most shots the Q will perform better. Thoughts?
Advertisement Posted December 29, 2017 Posted December 29, 2017 Hi mikeodial, Take a look here Upgrade from X Vario to the Q. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted December 29, 2017 Share #2 Posted December 29, 2017 The two cameras are more complementary than competitors. A 70mm equivalent crop of the Q is possible, but hardly equal to XV set to 70mm. The EFF on the XV permits angled viewing, not possible on the Q. I have both cameras and recommend you budget for a Q to add to your XV, thus adding full-frame image resolution and a faster starting aperture to the flexibity of the XV.
Le Chef Posted December 29, 2017 Share #3 Posted December 29, 2017 I’m still mulling an upgrade from my DL 109. One path has me replacing it with a CL and a smallish wide angle zoom lens + prime with macro. (Trying to keep the weight and complexity to a minimum.) The other path has me keeping the 109 and adding a used Q. Still not sure which might be the better option. Most of what I shoot are landscapes and what I would call abstract patterns. Any povs greatfully recieved.

Any povs greatfully recieved. The Q may have a better image quality - at 28 mm. As soon as you crop the advantage will be lost. Remains the faster lens, balanced by the lack of versatility - a bad trade IMO.I would advise you to save a bit more and consider entering the M or SL system. The CL is certainly an optimal upgrade for you, especially with the 11-23 and 60 mm macro But you are talking about 6000$ or so. If you want to keep costs, size and weight down but upgrade versatility and quality, have you considered a Panasonic GX8 with a Leica DG Vario Elmarit 8-18 /2.8-4.0 and DG Macro-Elmarit 45/2.8?

Le Chef Posted December 30, 2017 Share #6 Posted December 30, 2017 To answer in reverse order: What don’t I like about the 109? I’m using LR and becoming reasonably proficient but the images still feel as if they lack bokeh. That’s hard to quantify but a sense there’s more to be revealed. Think CD vs Vinyl. The rate at which the camera processes images feels slow. So from shutter release to EVF image moving again. I’ve tried different cards but the difference is negligible. The GX8 would apparently be a good option. Coincidentally a friend today recommended the Pen-F as another alternative. This is not an urgent “must replace now” scenario, but just an awareness of more to be explored both personally in terms of composure, focus, and exposure, but also in terms of appreciable differences other equipment might offer.
Astropap Posted January 18, 2018 Share #7 Posted January 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Q by X Vario. I was thinking about selling the X Vario to help pay for the Q but I like the B&W shots too much. Welcome, dear visitor! Leica Guy Posted January 20, 2018 Share #8 Posted January 20, 2018 Q by X Vario. I was thinking about selling the X Vario to help pay for the Q but I like the B&W shots too much. A REALLY attractive piece of art. The camera AND the B&W image.

gbealnz Posted January 21, 2018 Share #10 Posted January 21, 2018 Agree completely, every now and then I too consider selling my X-Vario, but it has been on at least two Europe excursions with me, and provided countless images, plus it has sentimental. How could I get rid of it? The B&W images are especially good. YES, there is faster etc, but OMG, part of the fun is actually slowing down, enjoying it.
