CL & 18mm Elmarit vs Ricoh GR

Recommended Posts

G'day

Great question.

Very unscientifcally, a few shots below. These are just snap shots on the same settings, handheld (and you can see some aren't quite sharp), so take them with a grain of salt. None of these have any post-processing, so exposure errors are my fault! All auto-WB.

One advantage of the Ricoh is that you can use an AF-ON button to decouple the focus from the shutter. And it is pocketable (in jeans).

Playing with the RAW files in Lightroom, both are capable of adaptation fairly easily. I prefer the Leica colours (have never liked the "Ricoh Green") and of course the CL has the advantage of being able to use much, much better glass being interchangable and with access to most of Leica's great lenses. That said, a quick and nasty comparison does show just how well Ricoh did with the GR. While I can't claim to have tested everything, for me the GR remains the benchmark for a pocketable, high IQ camera that packs manual access to most controls into a compact.

The first shot (of the stereo) is ISO1600, 1/60, f/2.8.

The second shot (of the guitar) is ISO1600, 1/60, f/2.8.

The third shot (of the amp) is ISO3200, 1/60, f/2.8.

The fourth shot (of the books) is ISO400, 1/60, f/2.8.

Ricoh GR first followed by the CL.
