TheCanadian1 Posted December 4, 2017 Share #1 Posted December 4, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was considering in purchasing a new or used 50 Summicron V5 and the difference is $800. I would rather get used for the price. Are there things I should consider that I should go new instead? Is there a way to find out production year through serial number...does that matter considering it’s V5 of the lens? Thanks. Advertisement Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Hi TheCanadian1, Take a look here Summicron 50 V5 new or used. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted December 4, 2017 Share #2 Posted December 4, 2017 (edited) Either way, buy from a reputable dealer with some warranty and return policy. Jeff Edited December 4, 2017 by Jeff S
Stealth3kpl Posted December 4, 2017 Share #3 Posted December 4, 2017 Try to get one that is coded. I had an early Mk5 which wasn't well calibrated. I bought a newer coded version and there was a night and day difference. I suspect tolerances were tightened up in the digital period. Ideally try before you buy. coupdefoudre Posted December 4, 2017 Share #4 Posted December 4, 2017 Check serial number here (or some variant page for the particular lens in question): https://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/50mm_f/2_Summicron-M If using the big auction site look at the Feedback ratings of the Seller. I never buy from a vendor with less than 100% Positive, unless it's a 99.8% rating or some such from someone who has thousands upon thousands of Feedbacks. Also beware someone selling a lens for FAR less than it ought to be. Could be legit - or might not be. I sent about a dozen emails to that big auction site about Russians and hackers selling Noctilux and other lenses for ridiculous prices (and often using other seller's images!) I imagine lots of money was lost. A cheap price on a three-day auction using another seller's images might be true.... NOT! Finally, and obviously, use the lens right away to see if it is performing as it should. No one wants to hear two months down the road that the lens is faulty. Good Luck!
