Advertisement Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 Hi pgk, Take a look here Looking after Memory Cards. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pgk Posted November 29, 2017 Author Share #2 Posted November 29, 2017 This bit interests me: "..... has ..... come across issues in the past when customers are formatting cards on a Mac: “I’ve had customers reporting the storage space decreasing over time, even though they’re formatting their cards regularly. It seems that in some cases, the cards will retain ‘Apple .Trashes’ files on the directory, despite the cards being formatted in the camera. Formatting the cards on a PC seemed to clear the problem.”" Can anyone shed light on this - is it worth a secure delete of the trash whilst the card is still in the computer? gyoung Posted November 30, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 30, 2017 (edited) Far better to follow the old rule of computers, format the storage medium in the device in which it is to be used. So format the cards in the camera, not just delete the old photos but a proper format. I dont use Macs, so can't comment on their inadequaces! erudolph Posted December 6, 2017 Share #5 Posted December 6, 2017 Formatting cards in camera when the camera is an SL that increments the folder number with each format?
gyoung Posted December 6, 2017 Share #6 Posted December 6, 2017 Formatting cards in camera when the camera is an SL that increments the folder number with each format? What does it matter what the folder name on the sd card is, I copy the files direct to a new folder on the hard drive, the name of which describes the contents. erudolph Posted December 7, 2017 Share #7 Posted December 7, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) It increments the image number as well, say from L1060512 to L1070000 Edited December 7, 2017 by erudolph
gyoung Posted December 7, 2017 Share #8 Posted December 7, 2017 Can't you turn that off in the menus? Gerry

My technique for older cards is to do a full format in SDformatter and then format in the camera. After that they are OK for a series of in-camera formats again.

pgk Posted December 8, 2017 Author Share #11 Posted December 8, 2017 The camera will not defragment the card. My technique for older cards is to do a full format in SDformatter and then format in the camera. After that they are OK for a series of in-camera formats again. I am not sure that you can 'defragment' an SD card. Each read/write session reduces the card's life so I don't think that doing so is usually recommended/supported. I posted the above link out of interest, but in all honesty I have to admit to being a very poor user of cards, I delete in camera all the time, mix formatting in camera and on the computer and so on. Yet I've only had a couple of card failures in over 15 years - on relatively new and lightly used cards. I only buy cards from reputable sources to minimise risk of counterfeits though.
tobey bilek Posted December 26, 2017 Share #12 Posted December 26, 2017 Do not erase images, do not format in computer. Keep it simple

I could not disagree more. The author is following rumors, innuendo, not expertise. In other words he is simply compiling popular comments, not facts. It is the cheapest journalism formula. lct Posted December 27, 2017 Share #14 Posted December 27, 2017 (edited) Can someone elaborate on why in-camera formatting is advisable? I'm no techie at all but i stopped following this advice since i discovered that non Sony cards formatted by Sony cameras cannot be rescued. Now i format all my cards in my Macs through SD Formatter, nothing else. Never got any problem since then and all my cards can be rescued by PhotoRescue or same. Exodies Posted December 27, 2017 Share #15 Posted December 27, 2017 Just a thought - the in-camera formatter has no options; the computer formatter could be configured to do it incorrectly.
frame-it Posted December 27, 2017 Share #16 Posted December 27, 2017 don't delete from the camera menu turn on show hidden files on mac os and then delete everything, and then format the card in-camera. [format in-camera so the camera can creates the structure it needs for saving files] simple..never had any problems. sd cards follow the SSD rules never let it fill up completely, too many read/writes and errors will occur, a simple delete and format is better. pico Posted December 27, 2017 Share #17 Posted December 27, 2017 Can someone elaborate on why in-camera formatting is advisable? It's simply nonsense folk-lore.
lct Posted December 27, 2017 Share #18 Posted December 27, 2017 [format in-camera so the camera can creates the structure it needs for saving files] Again i'm no techie at all but the camera does not need to format to create those structures does it? lct Posted December 27, 2017 Share #19 Posted December 27, 2017 Just a thought - the in-camera formatter has no options; the computer formatter could be configured to do it incorrectly. SD Formatter is made for that. Only option is quick format or overwrite format. I don't see what error it could make but i may be wrong. pico Posted December 27, 2017 Share #20 Posted December 27, 2017 (edited) turn on show hidden files on mac os and then delete everything, and then format the card in-camera. [format in-camera so the camera can creates the structure it needs for saving files] You can delete invisible files (dot leading file names) but they come right back the moment Mac OS looks at the disc. Formatting in-camera does nothing to the file structure. SD cards contain their own file management system. .
