Leica SL2 48Mp?

The CL is 24Mp, the same as the SL, if my math is correct an APS-C sensor is ~1/2 the size of a full frame sensor, so if Leica were to put the same density on an SL sensor would this be 48mp?  Would Leica do this?

They may do it eventually.

The "megapixel wars" ended years ago. There was genuine demand to move from 2 to 6, 8, 12, 20 megapixels. And then it all stopped 9 years ago with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The bulk of the market has stayed in the 20 mp range for the past decade.

 

Anything beyond that is a specialist item with limited demand. I imagine that the Venn diagram of people who need 48mp, and of SL customers (actual and potential) has very little overlap.

It would be 56,3 MP. And no, Leica would not do it, at least not before there is a substantial increase in MP-Count with the Leica S successor.

hmm... maybe in 10 years. not now. if all your monitor in the office has 5k or 8k resolution then it needs more megapixel.

With the new Noctilux and the rumoured family of them I am becoming more interested in the SL because I have to - I need tethering.

 

Personally speaking, I would really like to see 50MP.

I have no need of ultra-high pixel counts. 24 MPixel seems to suit anything I need to do very well, from small to large scale photographs.

 

While I wouldn't go out of my way to buy an ultrahigh rez camera, if one came along with the same price, performance, and quality as what I have now, I wouldn't say "no!" but I'd consider whether it was worth the cost of exchanging what I had for it. If it was JUST the increased resolution, the answer would likely be not...

It will not be easy for Leica to entrain new users to the SL-system if the top-end sensor remains at 24 MP. So my guess is that SL2 may have a resolution of 50+ MP. Alternatively that the SL2 will come in two versions, one very quick and efficient one with 24-ish MP, and one slower version with 50+ MP. But I also guess that the S-system will see higher resolution before we see the SL2, both based on a Maestro-III processor. So possibly S008 in 2018 and SL2 in 2019?

I suspect Leica S will finally limp to 50 odd mpx and the SL to 36 or so ......

 

..... and we will moan because by then everyone else with full frame will have moved on to 50mpx and medium format to 75-90mpx. 

 

Of course Leica may have some secret developments and leapfrog to the front with something spectacular ...... but I somehow doubt it ...... 

 

The SL was something of a pleasant surprise ... but in reality only the EVF was technologically ahead of the competition.

In my opinion the resolution for a FF sensor is yet high enough. If a higher resolution is a must - which is seldom the case - it is advisable to buy a MF System. Leica has one - but this would need more resolution and a new sensor. But

the Fuji GFX is a strong competitor and I am not sure, Leica will go on with a new S. And people who need the best

picture quality available an mainly for studio might go for a Phase One - if they have money enough. So the higher

resoulution argument for the SL is rather a marketing argument and i am not so sure, that it would attract new buyers so much. Leica should rather concentrate on producing new lenses for the SL system, but the right ones. There are some

requiremant by customers which are not yet covered by the present native lenses. I.e. stronger teles and/or at least an extender for the 90/280 and a macro lens. Leica could make more business as well with the SL and sell these lenses to present owners of the SL. There are people who would like to buy a SL -regardless of the resolution but don´t because of

too less native lenses. An another point is the flash system, which is not up to requirements of many people. Sony had a similiar problem with the flash system, but has solved it with new firmware and new flashes. So should Leica do.

Interesting to note that the initial demand for the 42MP Sony a7rIII is much higher than Sony expected.  Whether people need the greater resolution is irrelevant, people will buy cameras with the greater resolution.

They likely would buy the Sony at Leica price with Leica lens prices and choices in even lesser quantity than the SL.

 

Resolution is welcome but doesn’t drive sales.
