I must say the reviews are generally rather odd ......   ..... hardly anyone slagging it off (Kai is Kai... as usual) as bling for those with more money than sense ..... no complaints about it being years behind the competition ..... no 'the Cafujicon XX5 beats it by miles at 10% of the price' and no real 'if only's' of any real consequence.   Perhaps I should consider giving up Leica as it is making products that 'normal' photographers like ...... I'm far more comfortable fighting a losing

Up to you . . but I tell you, it's much easier writing 6000 words about something which doesn't need defending against a tide of moans and groans from reviewers who never seem to get the point of Leica!!

I had forgotten I was still subscribed to Reid Reviews and finally got round to reading about the CL .......   ....and then remembered why I let my subscription lapse before ....   I've read more exciting bus timetables ........ just a tiny bit of enthusiasm or praise above 'quite nice' would be ok ...... just a little bit of Huff wouldn't go amiss....   but there again......    I have found it an understated but essentially faultless little camera that does everything you want with no f

I thought that Reid's CL review and his follow-on Fuji comparisons were very fair and quite positive.  His reviews are always understated and technical. Within the context of his reviewing style, he seems to really like the CL.

 

My only complaint about his site is that, as others have noted, his B&W images--for reasons I don't understand--appear to be low contrast, bland and flat, from medium light grey all the way to medium somewhat darker grey.  Like a Polaroid printout from 1970.  But his images aside (and maybe he has reasons for those images in terms of his analytics?) Reid Reviews is a very honest, thorough and technically superb review site and I never fail to learn something.  

 

His focus seems to be on technical excellence  and, unlike certain other review sites, there's no "you gotta buy this now!!!  (site links helpfully enclosed) It is beyond amazing!! It cures potato famine, levitates and is so incredible that it is the best camera I have ever used (this week)!!!!!" snake oil  hype. I want my review sites to be smart (unlike TCS whose Leica reviews are simply bizarre) and, above all, honest. While I read (sometimes) the hype-masters, often for their inadvertent humor, I trust Reid Reviews. 

 

I also trust Reid Reviews for some areas that he focuses on, but I have subscribed long enough and argued with him by email enough times to know where some of his limits are.

 

Any reviewer has some model in mind of who he/she wishes they were.  Sean's models are probably Garry Winogrand or Tod Papageorge.  And he is a former art student who admires engineers for their ways of achieving objective truth, but hasn't had that sort of an education.  It's an uncomfortable mix, must be hard to live with, but I think I can learn from his observations.

Interesting, that he only considers the CL a way station on the path to the true destination, the M. He rambles on a bit.   And he seems to have gone Hollywood in the past few years.

I don't have a review to post, but a comment about an issue I haven't seen addressed anywhere. 

 

Lens cap. You cannot remove it with the palm of your hand. You must pinch it in the middle. This I find to be an oversight. 

 

Slippery fingers can easily make you lose a lens cap into a grate, down a cliff, wherever. $45. That's right. $45 for a piece of badly designed plastic. Then to cover the lens you cannot use one hand, unless you set the cap down and re-pinch, or train your hand to do magician style card manipulation. I can use on hand if I jam the edge of the cap into the lens, coming dangerously close to scratching the glass. I can only think the designers thought you're supposed to take the cap off, and leave it off for the duration of the shooting "experience" - be it 5 minutes or 10 hours. 

 

Does anyone else find this annoying or am I just used to my nikon and olympus lens caps that have the lock release on the edges and in the middle?

So buy a few 2$ ones on eBay and put this one in the safe. Actually I don't use lens caps. Protective filters...

Some people like to complain that filters as protective glass is just reducing image quality by adding. . . more glass. More glass to clean, to collect dust, to collect scratches. I think it was this guy :

At any rate, do all 52mm filter size lens cap work? And doesn't it break some kind of Leica code if I use a nikon or canon cap on a Leica camera?

I have the same problem with these lens caps.  I take Jaap's point but surely it would be better is Leica just did a better cap.  With the present design it's also difficult to stand the camera on the lens front for a short time while, for instance, you remove the SD card to back up on your computer.  With a spring loaded cap below its either that or lean the camera on the side or open and close the bottom door twice.  All easily possible but irritating.

 

The Q has a push-on cap that works well if you're careful about how you slip it on, but it's not as well designed as the old, more solid feeling metal caps that Leica lenses used to have.  A trivial but sad negligence.

 Also, lots of complaints `i seem to remember (?) about the lining of the cap wearing away. Anyway I put on a filter – like Jaap.

Oh yes - you break the Leica code of honour - the factory staff will form a hollow square, you will be dragged in, the red dots ripped off your cameras and you will be cast out into the canikon void...

 

Specific protective filters by B&W and Heliopan are made of a special thin and strong glass which will minimize any image degradation (which was nil to for all practical use anyway), and are Nano-coated, which makes them far easier to keep clean than any lens.

 

Yes - generic lens caps will fit.

My main gripe is that the caps are domed so the lens ..... or the camera plus lens cannot be rested cap side down. 

 

Flat please, and side pinches as per the SL.

a sony a6xxx would be an alternative to the CL but the latest model comes with a 410 page manual and some users here have stated that they don’t read manuals.

 

I bought a Sony A6XXX after becoming disillusioned with the Leica TL.  However the Zeiss/Sony lenses are noticeable not as good as the Summicron-T 1:2 / 23 ASPH or Vario-Elmar-T 1:3.5-5.6 / 18-56. ASPH I bought with the TL which is about to be part traded on a CL.

Some of this may have been covered, so apologies if this bores anybody. Just wondered if anybody else has had the same observations. I'm new to the site, so. . . 

 

Image quality for the CL is what everybody says. Great in low light/ lens is better than expected, censor and processor are above average quality, etc, etc. At any rate, I'm not qualified enough in the technology to make an informed, reasoned analysis over electronics. However, I'm still trying to get sharper images for guerrilla portraiture i.e. street photos -  getting used to what settings work best. But some other annoying observations aside from the lens cap :

 

The battery charger light should remain off, or red, and then turn on green when charged. It's exactly the opposite. Green means go, not stop. Why isn't there a direct plug in from the charger? Another cord adds to the junk we need to carry around. An option would have been nice. The function wheels should have more friction. They fly around while handling with great ease. The lens strap is non-adjustable? Seriously? The battery doesn't last, but it's a good thing they aren't proprietary. I also wonder about security with the wifi access. Removing the card to download pictures is just like loading and removing film, so I'm ok with no cables - and there is wireless transfer. I also wish it could take timed, bracketed, photos, and connect to a power source. 

 

Flash is a small problem, but it's not unique to the CL. I wonder why flash standards haven't been created so any flash can work with any camera? Light is light. Should be accessible by all. I understand every camera is different, blah blah blah. Been saying this for decades, but capitalism gets in the way. Like always. I'm sure I'll get shite for this. 

 

I come from olympus (among others), which placed the shutter speed on the lens mount, so I'm not unaccustomed to adapt to multiple cameras and use. It would be nice if it were a traditional set up with shutter speed on top with aperture on lens, but I can deal. Both dials should be programmable. It should have a rear focus button, or at least a programmable one. 

 

My observations after a few weeks. I really do like this camera, though. I just wish it didn't cost $4K.

I wish I owned a FED. But If I remember correctly, russian cameras and optics were above average in the early-mid Soviet era. I don't presume to be an expert, though.

The light turning off when done charging isn't unique to Leica - my Fuji does the same (and I think my Nikon does as well)

 

As for a charger w/o the cord...I have one from Wasabi that I use for my Fuji....it works with their batteries as well as the brand names, and the plug folds in to the body of the charger. I have one on order for the CL along with a couple of batteries.

      Is it possible to set the FN Key in Play mode to something else than permanent DELETE? Am exasperated by accidental deletes of nice shots-- for instance, finger slides off the move left button of the joy stick... ZAP! Aargh.

      I'm already using a 35/1.4 Summilux-TL ASPH on a Leica SL2, but I'd like a much lighter load around my neck. (As I write this, I'm still recovering from being too stiff to turn my head from side to side or tilt it back without neck and shoulder pain.) I'm considering purchasing a used Leica CL and used Vario-Elmarit-TL 55-135mm f/3.5-4.5. 
      - Does the CL track just human faces, or will it track animal faces too?

      - Does the CL allow you to choose the initial AF point? 
      - How well does the CL track moving faces at f/4.5 - does it lose focus with a subject moving towards you erratically at 3 MPH? At 15 MPH?

      - How long is the battery life (# of shots) using just the EVF (no LCD)?

      - I know the camera lacks external ports of any kind. Is there an external power solution using a dummy battery with cable to a USB external battery?

      I am looking for an L-Bracket, with Arca Swiss compatibility, for use with my Leica CL camera. Occasionally it will be used with tele-zoom lenses, but mostly with smaller lenses.
      There are a few threads on this subject in the forum, dealing specifically with bigger cameras, but none that I could find relevant to the CL. Googling brings up a lot of brand-specific solutions; a few claim to be universal. I would welcome any reports from members of this forum, of user experience with such a device, and recommendations. Thank you.

      I have a Voigtlander 35mm 1.2 Mk III lens fitted on my CL with the M-L adaptor. I set the lens detection to auto, in the menu, but I'm not convinced it is recognised as the shutter speed set seems too low.
      The lens is not in the dropdown menu as those are all Leica lenses. 
      The photos look OK in Capture One, but I would like to check that I've picked the right settings for the camera to recognise the lens.
      Any ideas?

      This is my first review here so I am not used to the technicalities of posting, please forgive me if I readjust things after I post.

      1. none of the lens makers / converters have been involved in these tests and I have personally purchased all 3 lenses, none of them have been provided.

      3. all opinions expressed here are my own and, just like with anything in life (especially photography equipment!), you may have a different one.
      A few bullet points about the tests:
      - done on my Leica M-P typ 240
      - done on a tripod with a 2 second timer to hopefully dampen most vibrations
      - no filters or hoods were used and lenses were extremely clean
      - captured at M-P's base ISO: 200 (with the exception of a few frames captured at 1.2 and 1.4 because 1/4000 was too slow to keep equal exposures so I set the ISO to PULL 100)
      - exposure was manual and the exposure time was adjusted accordingly with every aperture change (generally 2/3 stop) in order to hopefully maintain an even exposure between the samples
      - white balance was on AUTO
      - all focus was EXTREMELY CAREFULLY done using LIVE VIEW at f/2 for each lens, using both the focus peaking and my own eyes to make sure I get the best possible focus
      - focus was redone with every lens change
      - the 40mm was repositioned so that the main subject filled roughly the same size in the photos (as much as possible, the infinity tests obviously show the difference in focal length)
      - most tests were taken all all apertures but since this ended up requiring so much work I only included up to f/8, to be honest I don't think anything past that is relevant
      - all samples processed in Capture 1 PRO with the default output sharpening for screen (any image processor will apply some sort of sharpening from DNG to JPG)
      - I am sharing a Google Drive folder with all DNGs, JPGs, comparisons and misc images, all full size. Please check them out and use them for free, a credit would be nice if you end up posting them.

      A morsel of history: if you're reading this you most likely know what this lens is, otherwise this info can be easily found online.
      The G35/2 is supposed to be the "lesser performer" of the Contax G suite, the internet is funny like that, some person deemed it once as not being as stellar as the G45/2 (which is whispered to be one of the best lenses in 35mm photography history) and the internet has taken that and transformed it into "not a good lens" kind of rumour. I am here to prove otherwise.
      Here's a G35 / G45 specs comparison:

This 35 together with the Hologon 16mm are the only ones I do not own in G mount. I have shot all the other ones (21/2.8, 28/2.8, 45/2, 90/2.8) on my Contax G2 and adapted on my Sony A7R3 with a cheap Ulata adapter. They are sharp, very sharp wide open. And so light.
      Build quality: without further ado, I think FUNLEADER and Mr. Ding have done an amazing job here: the conversion is incredible, so tiny and lovely, with a great weight and feel. The focus action is nice and smooth and the little focus tab suits the lens. The black paint version is really beautiful, I have always been a black paint / lacquer fan, hence my M-P. This version will get patina with use (unless you're Lenny Kravitz and give it a good rub to look well used). The "gold" version has lovely sharp black engravings and a black focus tab. The focus tabs are really nice, placed at the perfect position where, when pointed straight downwards, the lenses focus at 4 feet / 1.2 meters. I also purchased a "gold" helicoid as I am planning to do a conversion myself. The "gold" helicoid feels like brass and it's a bit of a fingerprint magnet.
      The helicoid has "MR. DING" engraved on the mount. Pretty cool. I did a bit of digging and "Mr. Ding" is their master craftsman, maybe having been part of MGR Production. They are also behind the Bresson Viewfinder magnifier, which I happen to have on my M-P and love.
      I would love to find out more about Mr. Ding, if anyone has info please do share.

The lens did have a plastic ring glued on the front, on top of the original Carl Zeiss from markings, but I removed it easily and left no marks. Sorry Mr. Ding, I prefer the original Carl Zeiss engravings.
      The original lens hood of the G35 / G45 fits nicely, but I have the champagne version and I personally don't think it works with either the black or the gold version. I might spray paint it with a glossy enamel.
      Honestly, it looks amazing on the M-P. It is a gem of a little lens and a great performer.
      Customer service: excellent, very responsive, I had quite a few questions for them and they replied very quickly.
      Packing: excellent, pragmatic, not fancy.
      Shipping: wowsers, the lens was in my hand in Vancouver BC Canada in 6 days, dayum!
       
      PART 2 / 5: colour, focal length, sharpness close and mid distance
      Two notes about colour and focal length:
      - colour - the G35/2 renders the most accurate and neutral colours, next is the VM 40/1.2, while the 7artisans 35/1.4 M renders quite warm
      - focal length - the G35/2 is a little wider than the 7artisans 35/1.4 M, I wonder what their real focal lengths are. Please do share if you happen to know.
      Sharpness: the G35/2 is very sharp wide open, it nearly matches the VM 40/1.2 at f2, actually honestly we are splitting hairs between the G35/2 and VM 40/1.2. Keep in mind that the VM starts at 1.2, so from a lens design pov it has a lot of room to be sharp at f2. It's quite a feat how consistent the G35/2 is all the way up to the widest apertures. The G35/2 is sharper than the 7artisans 35/1.4 M at every aperture. I was surprised as well. In all honestly, I really love the 7artisans lens, it has a really nice 3d pop and the built is absolutely amazing.
      Check out these 100%s of this starling at f2! I used live view, there's no way to nail that in the viewfinder patch, I also took a bunch of shots and these were the best 4, maybe out of 12 or so.

      Focus shift: I did not test for it, but from my walks it seems to be fine.

      CONCLUSION:
      The Carl Zeiss Contax G Planar 35mm f/2 is a gem. Coming from great heritage, it is now encased in an amazing conversion from FUNLEADER for our Leicas. The G35/2 is an honest lens, you won't find clinical sharpness here, but since you're reading this you're probably not looking for that, but for the resurrection of a highly underrated Carl Zeiss optic. The G35/2 renders the world gently with neutral colour rendition, pleasant bokeh and a sprinkle of pop. The tiny form has a great weight and feel and it simply looks incredible on a Leica. The black paint version is shiny and will brass while the "gold" version has lovely sharp black engravings (bit of a fingerprint magnet though). I honestly look at my camera sitting on my desk now and hear the whispers: "take me out and make photographs". Well done FUNLEADER and Mr. Ding, hat's off to you.
      Just like the original little piece of history it now protects and focuses, the FUNLEADER conversion will also be remembered as a gem amongst the connoisseurs.
