jmahto Posted November 20, 2017 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yesterday I went to San Francisco auto show and when I was getting into the parked car, I kept the camera on the rooftop and forgot. When I was exiting the parking lot, I heard honking and shouting from behind. Fortunately I stopped and rolled down the window to hear what was it about. "Hey, there is something on your roof, maybe camera (it was in neoprene case)". The nice gentleman in car behind was shouting. I realized my mistake, grabbed my camera and thanked him many times. Let this be a reminder for my carelessness so that I never ever repeat it again.

rafikiphoto Posted November 20, 2017 Share #2 Posted November 20, 2017 A tricky situation. Could just as easily have been a crook trying to get you out of your car so they could mug you/steal the car....
Keith (M) Posted November 20, 2017 Share #3 Posted November 20, 2017 Many years ago in Germany I drove out of a shopping carpark in an old Beetle on which I had left a carton of a dozen eggs. Similarly someone tooted and gesticulated but in my case I was halted by a red traffic light - but the eggs weren't... As I watched them cascade down the windscreen then bounce off the bonnet into the road, the chap who had tooted pulled alongside with a 'well, I did try to tell you' expression. mikepower Posted November 23, 2017 Share #4 Posted November 23, 2017 I've done the same , travelling in the Pyrenees. Good thing i stopped to pee . The camera was still on the roof , some sort of miracle.

Then I heard that he is saying something about car roof and then I remembered. I am thankful to the person.

Ted Lemon Posted November 28, 2017 Share #8 Posted November 28, 2017 After my regular morning swim I grabbed a takeaway coffee from the machine. Went out to car and put coffee on roof. Started car thought nice day and opened the glass sun roof. Cue boiling hot coffee in my lap. Very painful.
andybarton Posted November 28, 2017 Share #9 Posted November 28, 2017 I once drove about 40 miles in the north west of Scotland, up hill and down dale, with my pair of Trinovids on the roof of my car. They were exactly where I left them when we reached our destination, the rubber covering gripping the paintwork of the car roof perfectly.

A friend of mine once got home in Norfolk after having driven from somewhere in the west country to find his iPhone on the roof of his car. It was in one of those Apple rubber cases and I guess it must have gripped like Andy's binoculars.

Daymadi-T Posted November 29, 2017 Share #13 Posted November 29, 2017 (edited) Hi every ones, It's happened to me the same story once; when I was for first time in Canberra, Australia.I was strolling alone in town and heading to a bridge, next to it was a deserted bistro. The front door of this bar was very typical. I took out my brand new Leica M8 and started to take some pictures when there is a young person passing by me, I said hello and the guy answers me with a smile: "It's very pretty this bar! Do you want me to take a picture of you with?" I nodded an approval and gave him my M8 after taking the precaution of passing the strap around his neck. He steped down to stay right on the way, then starts taking some pictures of me ...After that I said thanks and approached him to recover my gear ... suddenly he turned his back and runs to the opposite sidewalk with my camera till on his neck, just when a bick truck passed ... Obstructed by the long car, I could not see him anymore ... I was so amazed to have the right reflex ... around me there was no one for a possible intervention! "Damn, what a con" it was the only reflex that I still remember ..! It was like a flash ... the truck passes ...I saw the guy, always on the other sidewalk, smiled as walking towards me for giving me back my M8 already in one of his hand, waving with the index finger of his other hand this sign of negation " don't do it again ".Since we were near the bar I beg him to offer a draft! He smiled again, refused and went away ...! I swear it's true ! _ Fortunately goodmen were everywhere ! It was in one of those Apple rubber cases and I guess it must have gripped like Andy's binoculars. I did a scheme with the Greater Manchester Police about 10 years ago. One of the senior officers there said that one of the things that would most improve efficiency of the force would have been a magnetic mobile phone. They lost so many to the "place it on the roof and drive off" brigade.
abrewer Posted December 15, 2017 Share #15 Posted December 15, 2017 A wise man was asked by the novice, "Where should I put my camera?" The wise man said, "Around your neck, on its strap." Some advice never goes out of style.
#PhotographyByRandall Posted April 20, 2018 Share #16 Posted April 20, 2018 Had an acquaintance who carefully put his Nikon D3 into the bag and set it on the ground behind his car while he put the rest of his stuff into the trunk. You can see where this is going... He hopped in and backed up over the camera bag. Fortunately it was only a Nikon that was destroyed.
jaeger Posted April 20, 2018 Share #17 Posted April 20, 2018 I lost numerous water bottles like that but I finally learned by dropping my iPhone once. After that, I've never put anything over the surface of my car. I'm glad you didn't drop your camera otherwise we will be seeing a bargain Leica on ebay. Since you said that, I'd also like to remind all your finger loop users to check the tightness of the screw. I almost drop mine yesterday, it's also because the way I have it rest on my hand. Yesterday I went to San Francisco auto show and when I was getting into the parked car, I kept the camera on the rooftop and forgot. Herr Barnack Posted April 20, 2018 Share #18 Posted April 20, 2018 (edited) That means there is a demand for special edition rubber lined bottom cover plate for M. Perhaps Leica should offer the following as a regular finish option - https://www.dpreview.com/news/6905957779/leica-announces-special-edition-m-p-in-red-table-tennis-bat-rubber with suction cups on the baseplate as an option for extra security...
