Where have all the PLOOTs gone?

Hi Guys,

As my modest collection grows my thoughts have turned to buying a PLOOT.  I have examples of the Viso 1, 2 and 3 and much prefer the Viso 1 to the more modern types, even when using one with my M9 or MM.

Wanting something contemporary with my 1930's cameras I naturally started looking for a PLOOT.  With about 4,300 20cm Telyts made before the Viso 1 came out there must have been a similar number of PLOOTs made; so where are they all? I know that the most perfect examples are in JC-B's collection, but where are the others?

Best wishes,

Susie

I have always felt the  PLOOT was quite a mechanical and optical achievement.  A required development for the launch of the 1935 Telyt 200 and sightly later Telyt 400.  I have about 60 of them, and a data base of features and changes as they evolved. Strap lugs, accessory shoe, small logo, fixed viewer, flat glass, locking release and other changes were evolved over the years.  My best guess at total production is 6270, starting at 1001 and continuous to 7270 when the early black rim viso I was introduced. The big change was to the removable viewer at about 3500.  The addition of the accessory shoe and locking mirror collar release occurred about March 1938 at serial around 2300.

Some references are:

Leica Photography 11/35 for note on the first 97 built.

Leica News and Techniques May 1935 stating the 200 Telyt will be available in July. This was England, so possibly available a little earlier in Germany.

A Sept. 1938 offer by Leitz to factory upgrade the shoe and collar release.

I have seen removable viewers in literature as early as July 1940.

Many other important notes in Lager, van Hasbroeck, Rogliatti and others.

You got the answer ;) ... but wait and search and one PLOOT will surely appear somewhere.... it's the pleasure of collecting... I needed (if I remember well) 2+ years to find a Focorapid....

Peter Loy has one in the UK:

http://www.peterloy.com/stock-list.php

Leitz 'PLOOT' reflex housing, detachable finder version. Condition 5/E (minor marks on screen, some re-painting)

  £65.00

No affiliation except temptation.

There are a couple in the auction site, Germany and Spain both more expensive, I'd be quick before Alan snaps them up  ;)

And if you want a Focorapid as well Red Dot have one: https://www.reddotcameras.co.uk/visoflex-equipment/11239-leitz-focorapid-14111-for-visoflex.html

Personally I'm just finishing accumulating all 17 of the Nikon F focussing screens, some super common some super rare these days, great fun.

Hello Susie,

Don't forget that until you find a PLOOT for your collection you can use a Screw Mount Visoflex I pretty much interchangeably.

And, altho I do not know if a PLOOT will allow this: A Visoflex I will allow you to do both horizontals & verticals.

I think for most intents & purposes a PLOOT & a Visoflex I take the same accessories & fittings and pretty much do the same things.

Best Regards,

Michael

Peter Loy has one in the UK:

I've bought off Peter and met him as he was coming up to near me and offered to bring an item I had bought with him so as to avoid shipping cost. I'd quite happily buy from him again.

Yes I agree I'm a serial "offender" from his site and have never been disappointed, very honest descriptions and decent prices, probably the best UK source of Nikon rangefinder gear (at a sensible price which excludes another source )

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your answers.  I regularly check ebay and also Peter Loy's site and a few others (usually in Austria!),  I'm really after a single, good example of the earlier (second) type with the removable focussing tube, but not as late as Peter Loy's one.  It doesn't have to be a bargain; the good one's never are!

Michael, as I mentioned I often use the Viso 1 on all my cameras, including the M9 and MM, and also the Viso 3 on the bayonet cameras.  It was because of an increasing interest in the 1930's equipment that I decided to go after a PLOOT.

My collection of PLOOT are ranking from 197x to 612x covering also the 2000 - 3000 - 4000 - 5000 batches ( most in the 5000 batch)
