I'm pretty sure the film reminder shown below never appeared on any M2.

True? Where might it have come from?

Hello Pico,

A.Noctilux is correct. M5 back door. Or indicator.

Someone probably switched the back door of an M5 with the back door of the M2.

Back doors come off by gently pulling that little lever, that is visible in the hinge corner, when the door is opened.

Or, someone replaced the M2 indicator face with an M5 indicator face.

Best Regards,

Michael

They did make it this way because the film speed was, by definition, set into the proper meter wheel on top, so it was "remembered" directly... the tme/aperture scales on the back could be used to remember that, for instance 2,8/125 is equivalent to 2/250 and so on (while on the Leicameter the "equivalence concept" was directly shown on its scales)

Hello Pico,

Not necessarily a "mess-up".

Some parts on Leica M's are modular, Like exchanging film backs on a Hasselblad 500C.

Back doors on many film* M's are intechangeable. As I wrote in the Post above.

A person with a Black M2 might have wanted, or needed, a new back or a new film type indicator.

Not every person who bought a black M2 bought it to be acollectors item.

Beside that: When you buy a chrome M2: How do you know whether or not the back door or the film type indicator is original or if it is a replacement?

Best Regards,

Michael

* This is what people used to call analogue cameras before a certain time period.
