Leica M9 in cold conditions

A few months ago I sought advice in advance of a trip to Nepal with respect to the cold, battery life etc.  I have now completed the trip and thought my experiences might be of interest to others:

I took my M9 with 35, 50 and 90mm lenses and 3 fully charged Leica original batteries.  In addition I took an Anker 20,000 mAH powerbank, a Powermonkey extreme solar charger and a Leica compatible USB battery charger.  I was 15 days away from mains power with about 8 days when overnight temps were at -15 or -20 Celsius and we were several nights above 5000m.  Tent based throughout.

An hour before getting up I would put the camera in my sleeping bag inside a sealed bag to raise its temperature but daytime ambient temps remained at about -5 degrees.  During the day I carried the camera in a Leica neoprene ER case which was very versatile and covered the camera with any of the lenses and a fixed hood.  I turned off preview and felt this extended battery life a lot. In very cold conditions I covered the camera and case with a stuff sac and kept it inside my jacket.

I was impressed by the battery life.  One charged battery was never used, the other two were never less than 1/3 charged and were recharged a couple of times via solar or the power bank.  I took about 2000 shots and never felt anywhere near running out of battery power.  The solar charger was effective but slow, even in bright high altitude light.  I think 2 power banks would have been an adequate substitute but it is reassuring to have solar as a last resort.  There were absolutely no shutter or exposure problems.  Occasionally the bayonet fittings felt a bit sticky or slow due to the cold.

Note that I had a commitment to various mountaineering objectives so took far fewer shots than someone who did not have this distraction and could shoot single-mindedly....

In summary the M9 was outstanding even after four days bouncing about on very rough roads!

Those are great news regarding this amazing camera.

I give great merit for you report

OTOH for me, I think the issue is if the M9 sensor gets corrosion on these conditions, as i believe the main cause of the free Leica M9 sensor replacement was moisture and humidity.

Because there should be lots of condensation in and out of jacket or tent :) how did you find the sensor after all is said and done?

Leica is not replacing sensors for free anymore, you have great courage!

Thanks

I does, but for cameras of certain age. Also, sensors corroded even in cameras spending most of the time in doors.
