Hasselblad X1D with Leica M lenses

Now that the KIPON X1D M adapter is available for the Hasselblad X1D (the first batch was sold on Ebay), first test reports become available showing different results.

I did some tests myself with a rigid Summicron and wide open the vignetting is just acceptable (see the attached example of my daughter doing her homework).

On a 5k iMac 27" screen the images are real stunning.

Here is also an example how the combo can look like (unfortunately, its not my gear):

Frankly, I thought that M lenses wouldn't cover such a large format : I hope to see more results with different lenses (expecially 35 and lower... I think that 24/21 aren't usable... unless cropping, of course ) : I saw in a HX1D forum that the only M Mount lens with a strong vignetting (inded, better to say, a real un-coverage with "tunnel" effect) of the 5 or 6 tested is a MS Optics 50 1,1... and the Noctlux, too, has a less than sufficent coverage.

I'd be very curios to see the results with some of the lenses displayed in yout fist picture... the 21 asph, the WATE... and there is even a CV which seems to be the Hyperwide 10mm... ;)

Someone made a pretty comprehensive report of several 50mm M-lenses on the X1D here: http://www.hasselbladdigitalforum.com/index.php?topic=5324.0

Unfortunately the images are not visible, i.e. the attachments won't open, unless you register. But if you say you don't own HB equipment in the registration process, you're out of luck as you won't be let in by the moderator.

I'm registered on that forum, and I'd have to say that it's a stretch to say the 50 APO Summicron is "usable".  The Noctilux and 50 Summilux show not just vignetting, but cut off corners when stopped down.  Looks like a waste of time to me.  The whole point of the X1D is that sensor, in a compact form - as soon as you start cropping (which you must, in my view), you're better off with an M10.

hahahhaha - I guess that is what you get when the imaging circle of the lens doesn't cover the full size of the chip - yes? and when you crop out the vignette - what are you left with....

hmmm let me see ...aha!

80% of 50 megapixels > 100% of 25 megapixels...

perhaps there may be some use in the adaptors for X1D owners of M lenses and other lenses from other manufacturers after all.

The Hassie also has a VERY slow electronic shutter read rate, making it (effectively) unusable on moving objects, so adapting lenses that don’t have shutters is not really very practical. Check Ming Thien’s blogs for info. He’s the chief technical officer or some similar role for Hassie and knows of what he speaks.

Can you cut down on the silly rhetorics, please?

Opinions about usability seem to be quite varied, as one of the most recent posters @ thehasselbladdigitalforum.com - Re: X1d and Leica M lenses has posted the following.

"So my Kipon M/X1D adapter arrived last night. I won't post samples but here's my take:

-The 135mm and 90mm f2 have no vignetting. (maybe a touch on the 90mm)

-the 16-18-21 WATE has no vignetting at 21mm

-the 35mm Summilux, 28mm Summaron have visible vignetting equivalent to one zoom push of the AF-D button. You can see that it removes just a but of the frame and I'd say we have 80% usable frame giving roughly a 40mp capture

-the 0.95 Noctilux has the most vignetting equivalent to 2 zoom-ins of the AF-D button, bringing it back to a 50mm capture at about 30mp

It's really nice shooting at wide apertures - indoors in dim light you can shoot at 1.4 or 0.95 and have relatively high shutter speeds of 1/250 and low ISO. This is really nice to have.

The Electronic shutter has too slow a scan rate and some types of lighting will create severe banding across the frame looking like dark and light horizontal bars at equivalent spacing. Turning off the guilty lights solves it, as does shooting, in several cases, at 100 iso.

Basically M lenses are extremely usable on the X1D, better IMHO using them on the SL. It's easy to focus and using wide apertures gives even more bokeh than the same aperture on an M10 or SL.

i set my C1 dial setting to A priority, Electronic shutter and the DOF button to be zoom. Very easy to press the DOF button with my pinky, zoom 100% and manually focus. the EVF, while, not the SL EVF is very capable in letting you nail focus.

The M lenses are much easier to focus manually than the X lenses as you know instinctively where you need to turn the focus, the throw is much shorter and quicker, whereas with the X lenses, you have no idea where you are focussed and have to turn back and forth to find focus.

My M lenses are now back in operation with the X1D! Very happy."

Whats about the X1D with Leica S lenses? Do somebody know the way to use this combination?

Impossible since aperture is controlled electronically, until Hasselblad releases a reverse engineered smart adapter like Leica has the S-Adapter H and S-Adapter C.

So, my only M now is 246 and just received the adapter for my X1d. My M lenses are not bad on the X1d, and it certainly gives me 4 new lens options over the two XCD lenses I own, waiting patiently for more to be released. But my impression is my M does better with these lenses, so it may very well be a waste of time and money for most. Certainly prefer my XCD lenses on this camera.

One thing will note, the X1d camera sure felt better in the hands with the M lenses on than my M, or any other Leica I currently own or have owned. Wish Leica would take a clue on that. Much nicer body and user interface design.

What M lenses have you tried and would you post or provide a link to some full size samples, as there seems to be a lack of available samples for people to judge. Thanks.
