Alternatives to Lightroom

I have been following this thread with interest. For some time now I have been considering moving away from LR6 due to many of the reasons given ie not wanting to go to subscription. My LR version is 6 I did mange to up date today to 6.3 only to be locked out due to running OS 10.8. I do not wish to upgrade my OS. My thoughts have turned to either capture 1 9 because of my OS version or Affinity.

I am leaning towards Capture 1 as there is at least one book written about it. I like to read a book or ebook for help.

The only book I can find on Affinity is in German.

My main requirements are just for basic editing. My LR catalogue is not very well structured and I would like a fresh start.

I would keep LR going but all new imports would go to new software and older photos would be imported as required.

I assume a seperate print module is required. I imagine I can import to LR print module as needed.

My cameras are m9 and m9m1. I have silver efex as plug in on LR.

If any members have thoughts or hints on my proposed change of software I would like to read them.

Thanks in advance.

Mike.

You can export from C1 to LR, as indeed you can import from LR to C1. That shouldn't be a problem. I don't print, so no help here.

Although (IMHO) C1 is the better RAW developer it isn't a DAM system and I prefer LR for this aspect. As such I keep both. I do all my RAW developing in C1 and store the finished article in LR. I've been doing this for years and it works for me. If you're considering C1 you'll need a DAM system and LR is already to hand so use it.

There's quite a learning curve to C1. They have webanairs and plenty of YouTube stuff which should help. Once you get the hang of it, and particularly set up pre-sets it's a breeze. The keystone tool, LCC tool and colour management dials are superb. The local adjustment tool is superior to LR. I moved from LR some years back and never regretted it.

Hope this helps

Adobe's discontinuation of Lightroom has been the last straw for me. See Richard Butler's article at dpreview and the 1608-counting comments chiming in for others who are not cheering Adobe.

https://www.dpreview.com/opinion/5431017013/rip-lightroom-6-death-by-subscription-model. It's not a matter of the cost of a subscription. I am on the hunt for alternatives even if they cost more, involve a learning curve and require changing my workflow.

Lightroom combines digital asset management (DAM) and photo editing functions. Of these, the DAM functions are more important to me. I don't do much post-processing and I haven't found Lightroom's RAW conversion better than CaptureOne's or DXO's in any case. It's far more important for me to be able to catalog, search, filter, tag and keyword and locate my files out of a stash of more than 150,000.  I suspect others have similar requirements. Files requiring close work can always be exported to a specialised photo editor, which most of the seeming alternative out there seem to be. What's harder to find is a good DAM application.

As I conduct my search I would be grateful  to hear from others who could share their Lightroom-free workflows. What do you use to manage your pictures and how? I hope we can create a list here that will be useful for anyone else migrating away from Lightroom. Thank you in advance.

I left LR when they introduced the subscription model a few years. Went to C1. Have used C1 on and off for a long time and now I'm using just C1. I feel the color algorithms are better in C1 than in LR 6.xx . Yes, C1 has introduced a subscription model as well and for the moment they offer a stand alone solution as well. LR's DAM is very good and will be hard to replace. My DAM solution is using PhotoMechanic for culling, key wording and organizing. The color coding in PM will cross over into C1 for me. My assets are stored on external drives that I can pop back in search for needed images and my images have always been in reference system not in LR or C1 catalog system. I'm very happy with C1 for my workflow at this time and that could change in the future.

C1 does have a learning curve to it and someone said above they video library on youtube is very helpful plus the live broadcast they do from time to time. You may want to contact David Grover (sp) with C1 for any extra info.

There other alternatives on the market for less money. They all have mentioned above by other members. You may want to check out the new On1 2018, understand they have introduced a new workflow for post production work of digital images. Still DAM is going to be the hard thing to replace when leaving LR.

Good luck in finding a solution to your workflow.

Aside from the very clear speed enhancement I notice a dramatically improved colour and saturation on my M240 files. The long awaited Leica lens profiles really are the icing on the cake for C1.

Since making my original post about moving from LR I have realised that I m must update my osx from mountain lion. The only option now is high sierra. I have done this and had a few problems. Apple help was very good and sorted them with me. My only problem now is that My LR 6.0 sometimes unexpectedly quits and start up. This requires a reboot. Once it is running it stays up all day.

I suspect it is to old for high sierra. I have been trying for hours to try and udate to LR 6.12 or something later than I have now.

I know there has been much discussion on this topic. Can any member give me a clue as to how to do this udate.

I am of course stand alone.

I only wish to keep LR running untill I have decided on new software so it is not the end of the world if I can not do it.

Thanks in advance forbany help

Mike.

Yes it has, effective year end, which is why there are threads like this here and every other forum regarding alternatives to the new Adobe subscription only model.

But it is still possible to update the stand-alone version, in my case LR5, to the last version, LR6 point something.

I have been contemplating this, but may simply leave it as is, or try something else. I have no use for the CC version.

Of course you can do that. But you won't get much bang for your buck after year end, as Adobe will no longer provide updates, which could eventually be problematic if you get a new camera or lens that isn't supported or if your operating system becomes incompatible. Plus, of course, no more new features, bug fixes, etc.

LR Classic will retain current standalone features and future updates (for the time being), but that will be via subscription.

one problem with high sierra is the GPU driver "needs updating" issue..even with the latest drivers installed...and thus LR recognises the GPU but wont use it..leading to an even slower speed.

i followed these instructions today..works fine now..but this is a workaround..not a "fix" from apple

basically, one removes all the GPUS files...then install the nvidia driver for mac OS [from the nvidia website], NOT the nvidia driver from Apple.

https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1025945/cuda-setup-and-installation/mac-cuda-9-0-driver-fully-compatible-with-macos-high-sierra-10-13-error-quot-update-required-quot-solved-/

Thanks for information frame - it.
I am a little out of my comfort zone on this one.
Will the eventual update come as an update to high sierra. Sorry to be so thick.
Cheers.
Mike.
