Lightroom or Capture one for Leica M files

Hello.

I would ask for opinions.

Which is a better aplication for processing exclusively and only Leica M dng files (Leica MD, Leica M10)?

70% is a conversion to black and white, 30% in collor.

I would ask for your experience and opinions between two applications, LIGHTROOM and CAPTURE ONE. Which gives better end results and why?

It's only for Leica M files and not files of other camera brands.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

Thank you

I know both of these applications from previous brands of cameras. (I had Canon).

Each has pluses and minuses.

But I can not decide which is better exclusively for Leica M.

So I'm asking for opinions.

I apologize if I ask. I am a new user of Leica M (before I had Canon) and I'm not sorry I have Leica :-)

Thanx

I own and use both of these software packages. I use Capture One for raw conversation, some editing, etc. I use LR for creating slideshows and mark-ups for Blurb ...

The only digital camera that I use is the Leica M8.2 (using scanned film for most work), but I was under the impression that Leica and Capture One had some kind of falling out after the integration of the M9 product, which would suggest that you can expect NO support for Leica products post M9. I don't know if you depend upon Lens profiles, etc., but this might be something that you need to consider depending upon how you're using these products.

Again: other than converting DNG files to something that approaches panchromatic pictures, I am not sure about your requirements. I will say, at least as far as the DNG files created by the M8.2, the Capture One editing facilities are more flexible and produce a better looking image than LR--without doing a lot more work within LR. In other words, if you depend heavily upon presets, the Capture One B&W presets, out of the box, are more likely to yield pleasing and predictable results ...

Of course, I'm sure that others on this Forum can (and will) provide more information about this.

I've used both Lightroom and Capture One for some time.  IMO C1 has always had more accurate color profiles than Lightroom, although the difference has gotten much smaller over the years.  But with my Leicas I still prefer create my own Lightroom color profiles.  While I am comfortable with both (using my profiles in Lightroom) for color shots I much prefer C1 for B&W.  I like a bit of "bite" in them and the C1 Structure Tool gives me that.  Lightroom lacks that tool  and I must use Silver Efex Pro to get the same effect.

its all still free...https://www.google.com/nikcollection/products/silver-efex-pro/

and it can also be used standalone..so if you already made a tiff from the original DNG via adobe DNG converter  [ https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html ]

..simply do the b&w processing in silverfx

I guess this is all opinion, so here is mine ...

I use C1 for my M photos, and think it gives a much better colour rendering that LR does.  It has a bit of a learning curve, but once you get into it, it is very powerful.  It also does great B/W conversions, as well as round tripping to PS or Affinity if you need to do that.

An unanswerable question as this depends more on the affinity the user has with the “philosophy” behind the software than with the results, which can be excellent with any of the major programs on the market.

The extent of processing one plans to do has an influence as well. LR and ON1 are designed for minimal to medium processing (ON1 has excellent presets, making it ideal for using on location) Photoshop is better for extensive work I would put C1 somewhere in the mid-range.

Same here. I use C1 since 6.7 when the M8 came out and later on when Leica stepped over to LR I used LR now and then. But from the beginning it was clear to me that C1 is much better in colors and definition. People were always talking about ‘workflow’. The workflow was better at LR. Well I know one thing for sure and that is that in 9 years of working I know exactly what C1 does with my image when I move a slider. In LR this is much more fuzzy to me and that sucks on my confidence in that program.

B&W: In the beginning Silver Efex Pro as a plug-in had in LR had an advantage over C1. Now, B&W conversions are better with C1 and less cumbersome, with less kitschy results. In one word: definition is better with C1.

Now, with the new subscription policy of Adobe I have left the whole package including PS CC. It’s much too expensive and there are a lot of interesting alternatives: Affinity, Luminar, etc. All for 69€ or around and no subscriptions. Affinity offers a few manipulations that I was dependent on PS for, like document-size, so that’s over now.

As others suggest, you’ll probably find the workflow differences to be greater than differences in image quality. I’ve been happy with C1 DNG conversions and their editing tools. It has some really peculiar workflow annoyances however and quite a learning curve to get the most out of the software. It’s also a (much?) more expensive path to go down.

I like the linear response option in C1 as this suits certain images, particularly night shots. The latest version has improved/rewritten exposure adjustment tools which do a better job of maintaining colours and tones apparently. I simply don’t have enough knowledge or experience with Lightroom to recommend one over the other though.

There seems to be some animosity between Phase One and Leica. It took a campaign of sorts on this very forum to get an M10 profile for C1. My hope is that any bitterness between the two is subsiding over time.

I've always used C1, starting with the Olympus E-1, so the tools make sense to me.  The cost of Adobe's subscriptions have kept me from much experimentation on the dark side, and now C1 has local adjustments, which amount to Photoshop's layers.  So I'm happy.  It seems I need to upgrade about once every two years.  As for Leica-hostility, they held off processing SL files a few years back, but did create a nice profile finally, about six months late.  And they always would process the M10 (using a default profile from the M240) but after a while came out with a more tuned profile.

Are those of you jumping the good ship Lightroom not expecting your new supplier to switch to a subscription model?

No because that’s the way they can stand in the competition with Adobe, they also adverise it as their selling point. It seems hard to deliver equal possibilities as PS so they have to stand out with something like non-sunscription or other non-intrinsic qualities. I tried Affinity, it’s not bad, but far from as comprehensive as PS

Well, yesterday I've find out that for me C1Pro is better than Lr.

I've tried a number of raw developers:

1. Raw Photo Processor (P50 profile)

2. Lightroom

908440.jpg

3. C1 Pro

Support for M246 file was added recently ( probably in 10.2 version).   I did not yet tested quality of conversion for M240 files.  In the past I preferred DxO Optics Pro for M240 pics, but they do not support M246 files and the Mm files - only color ones.  (Note, that DxO developer works well with a limited amount of Lenses.)

With C1Pro I can get satisfactory results for raw development much faster and can spend more time on selecting and sequencing images, on making a body of work.  Final Klyasma set can be found here http://gennbooth.photographer.ru/index.htm?item=3442&lang=eng
