Using a Leica MP with a 50mm Dual Range

Is an MP fully compatible with a  DR, just like an M3 is fully compatible with a DR?

I found a couple of conflicting reports using google.  I searched the Forum and could not find anything definitive either.

BTW -- I'm asking about an MP, not a digital M-P (240).

Thanks for your input.

No worry with MP, I used the combo for a while DR with MP 0.85 finder, almost as nice as with my M3 ;) with meter.

Not the case with M-P (typ 240), only usable to about 10m without the close adapter, and just fine with close adapter, in close range.

As side note, I use the DR with M10, first digital M usable with DR :) .

Thanks, a.noctilux.  Did you use the DR with its goggles for close focus?

My MP 0.58 would not work with my 50 DR

Thanks, Andy.  Do you know what caused your MP to not work with a DR?  Were you unable to use only the close focus but regular focus was fine?  Or were you unable to use it all?  Was it a matter of seating the lens to the camera and possible damage to the light meter mechanism?

I just took a look at the MP user guide (Page 74) and it has the following passage:

Use of older Leica M lenses

All Leica M lenses can be used. However, the following are not compatible with the exposure metering function:

Hologon 15mm f/8,

Super-Angulon-M 21mm f/4

Super-Angulon-M 21mm f/3.4

Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 with serial nos. below 2 314 921.

When changing lenses, the following must be set to infinity:

Summicron 50mm f/2 with close-up attachment

This seems to say the first four lenses will mount and work properly with the MP except the light meeter won't work.

The comment about the DR is not so clear.  Does it mean you have to set the DR to infinity when you mount it but after that it's fully compatible, including focusing at any distance (including close focusing with goggles), and you can use the built-in light meeter?  Does it mean you can only shoot at infinity if you use the light meeter, but you can use any focus distance if you don't use the light meeter?

Can anyone clarify what can and cannot be done using a DR?

Ray,

My comprehension of the MP and DR warning is that it works fine, but care must be taken when mounting. It says: "When changing lenses..." with no mention of limited usability.

I wonder what the 0.58 issue was?

Michael — I agree with you. Do you use an MP with a DR?

To be fair for M10 users, I used DR with this newly acquired with surprise and pleasure.

Before M10, only focus to 5m or 10m usable on older digital M (M8/9/240/262)
