hockey44 Posted October 20, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Greetings, Anyone have any experience with Nikkor 105mm 2.5 on M240? I have 90 EM and curious on any thoughts/ experience about using this Nikkor on M240? If it was positive, what recommended adaptor please. I used to love this old lens on my FE2 but that was a long time ago. Many thanks
Advertisement Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Hi hockey44, Take a look here Nikkor 105mm 2.5 on M240. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Ecar Posted October 21, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 21, 2017 Wonderful portrait lens - including on the M240. On the "large 'n heavy" side, though... I have two of these, one in Nikon mount and one in LTM. I assume you are interested in a Nikon to M adapter. If so, the best adapters I came across are made by Amedeo Muscelli - they are rather expensive. Hope this helps.

If Nikkor 105/2.5 in question is SLR variety there are many cheap adapters for nikon F to Leica M mount. Amadeo adapter you mention is probably for Nikon RF lenses. a911s Posted October 21, 2017 Share #4 Posted October 21, 2017 Not that heavy in AI form. Matches well in resolution to a Canon 5D 13MP camera. Very film like. A classic.
jmahto Posted October 22, 2017 Share #5 Posted October 22, 2017 How will it compare with 90 tele elmarit 2.8 thin. Does any one know? It should be close in terms of background blur. The reason for me asking is that 90 elmarit is very light.
a911s Posted October 22, 2017 Share #6 Posted October 22, 2017 105 2.5 has bokeh that's even better than 90 TE, but it is so much larger and heavier that I wouldn't recommend it for an M.

My understanding is that Nikon made several versions of the 105/2.5 in F mount, with changes in optical design. I'm not familiar with those. The RF version is a Sonnar type: the bokeh is beautiful, but it's definitely longer and bigger than the 90 TE (and the Summicron 90/2).
jmahto Posted October 22, 2017 Share #9 Posted October 22, 2017 I dusted my 90mm TE thin and shot my cat. https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/278044-it-is-sunday/?p=3380432
a911s Posted October 22, 2017 Share #10 Posted October 22, 2017 The 105 2.5 that I own (and compared against my 90 TE) is the Nikkor P (late pre-AI) lens. It is a the same Gauss formula as the AI. The earlier P version is a Sonnar design with less curved diaphragm blades and a longer minimum distance - similar to the Nikkor rangefinder lens.
tobey bilek Posted October 22, 2017 Share #11 Posted October 22, 2017 Beware of focus shift before you buy.
jmahto Posted October 23, 2017 Share #12 Posted October 23, 2017 Beware of focus shift before you buy. Why? Use EVF at shooting aperture.
blueskyoveraquatic Posted October 23, 2017 Share #13 Posted October 23, 2017 Hello Hockey44, As many others had said, there are many Nikon-to-LM adapters whose prices are ranging from $20-$a lot. My Nikon 50mm f/1.4 pre-AI was adapted to my Canon DSLR system. As a result, I had purchased an EOS-to-LM adapter. See attached photo: Welcome, dear visitor! jto555 Posted October 23, 2017 Share #14 Posted October 23, 2017 Funny thing. I just did a corporate portrait session for a client with the Nikon 105mm F2.5 on my M240 today and I have only just seen this thread. The adapter I use is the Kipon Nik-L/M and it works fine with no movement in the lens. I used a tripod as I have 16 people to shoot outdoors and the shots all had to match each other. So the weight was not an issue, but then it wouldn't be as I also use Canons with the holy trinity of zooms! Kipon: https://www.adorama.com/kalcmnk.html Ken Rockwell (hmmm, the jury is still out on him) review of the 105mm F2.5: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/105f25.htm For me I love the lens, it has good contrast, colour, is sharp and matches very well with shots done with other Leica lenses. Bokah is even better than my Leica 75mm APO. Which is saying something. As for optics, I believe that from the F to Ai and Ai-s the optics were all the same, just the lens coatings changed. Nikon only updated the optics for the "DC" lenses.
bocaburger Posted October 23, 2017 Share #15 Posted October 23, 2017 I've got the Nikkor in LTM so I just use a 9cm LTM-M adapter. The 90mm frame lines were actually more accurate than with a 90mm lens from about 2m up to infinity on the film M's and M9, but the M8 and M240 are calibrated for 2m so you'll want to crop loose especially at minimum focus distance unless you use LV. I haven't done a head to head comparo between it and any Leica 90mm but I don't recall ever seeing any huge differences. The Nikkor is heavier and slower (aperture and focusing action) than my 90/2 pre-asph, so the Nikkor doesn't land in my bag too often.
Csacwp Posted October 23, 2017 Share #16 Posted October 23, 2017 I shoot the 105mm AI-S f/2.5 on my SL with a Novoflex adapter, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Stunning portrait lens.
SilentShutter Posted October 23, 2017 Share #17 Posted October 23, 2017 I love(d) the Nikkor P 2,5/105 Sonnar and Gauss Design (later Version and also AI updated) but I would never use it with a "M" because I see no point in using just the EVF. The sharpness and resolution of all the 105`s (including the Nikkor 1,8/105 AIs) is on Leica niveau no question about it. I use the several versions on a Nikon D700/800/Df but for portraits I always prefer the almost forgotten (and cheaper to get) Nikkor Q 2,8/135 (outstanding Bokeh)or Nikkor Q 3,5/135 (sharp like a razor) ! hockey44 Posted October 24, 2017 Author Share #18 Posted October 24, 2017 Thanks for all your thoughts and comments. I was 'dusting off' my old FE2 and looking at various lenses. I have the 90EM but recalled what wonderful film results I had with the 105 in particular capturing faces in a very natural way-- not clinical. I think I will get an adaptor and experiment. I am 'spoiled' with a Nocti, 35FLE and 50Lux for choice-- but felt sometimes it would be helpful to be just a bit further away from subject. Many thanks

Many thanks I have F mount 105/2.5 AiS lens, I should use it more as a counter to clinically sharp 90mm APO Summicron, especially on SL (EVF) focus is a breeze. I checked last night Nikkor with F-M mount against 90mm APO Summicron and dimensionally and weight wise very similar. Also checked Flickr last night for examples, it produces fantastic results at max F stop on full frame digital, good 3D effect with gentle sharpness and smooth out of focus blur. hockey44 Posted October 25, 2017 Author Share #20 Posted October 25, 2017 Just went into my old Nikon bag and also found 135 F2.8-- any thoughts on using this maybe with EVF? I don't recall using this lens much, but was just curious. Sourcing an adaptor here in London-- any recommendations on where? Thanks and regards
