SL 50 vs 50 Apo at f/2

The rendering comparison at a 2 shouldn’t be what pushes your for or against. I have both. The APO you want because of its size and ability to be versatile (film, digital). It’s the best 50 in that category. The SL is obviously benefits from time and research and in my opinion is as nice if more nice than the APO in IQ. It has AF and much bigger. Two different lenses with different purposes. I love them both.

And SL 50 has better weather resistance.

Karbe addresses the two here...

And David Farkas comments on the differences at the end of this article...

These are two pictures of a test done at home with my 50mm collection : apo summicron , summicron rigid, noctilux f1, canon f1,4 ltm and zoom SL 24-90 at 50mm. My conclusion is that summilux SL 50 is the more clear and transparent but very close to the apo summicron M, the two best lenses of the group. test done with a gitzo tripod and with a self timer to avoid vibration as possible ( all using an SL body )

and if you like a comparison with an old lens this is the summicron 50mm rigid .. very very good in my opinion , even if with a little less color saturation an less definition

To do the Apo-Summicron-M 50 mm Asph justice, please note it's better on an M body than on the SL.

Disclosure - I prefer MF to AF optics.

Comparing old apples to fresh oranges is all very well but there is more, it is worth mentioning that APO 50/2, also Summilux M 50mm ASPH are negligible in size & weight compared to 50/1.4 SL. Besides, optically is there a bad recent Leica lens?

When i want to check for compactness i fit lens inside the lens hood of my Zeiss ZF Makro Planar 2/100 - hood is cylinder 60mm in height & 80mm in diameter, lens has filter thread of 67mm which is certainly less than any SL lens so far.
