Dead camera after Intermittent image formation with Leica R-SL adapter

When out yesterday I had to switch from the 24-90 to a R 180ROM and Leica R-L adapter. After flashing the image a couple of times the screen went black though settings information was all there.  Dismounting the lens from adapter and adapter from the body didn't work - same flashing image then black.  Wouldn't play a previous image either. Tried 24-90 with no problem. Back to the 180 and adapter - dismounted and remounted a couple of times and after flashing a couple of times the image "locked on".  Had to switch to the 24-90 later without a problem.  Then back to the 180 and same difficulties resolved after a couple of tries!

Today I tried it with a R100 ROM and got the same problem. Cleaned all the contacts on the body, both sides on the adapter and on the lenses with alcohol a couple of times and after a couple of false starts, and a second clean,  it's working, I hope permanently.

Has anyone else had similar difficulties?

...and I'd value any advice please...

If it happens again, while the screen is dark take a picture and look at its EXIF. My guess is the ROM contacts on the adapter, due to defectiveness or dirtiness was transmitting garbage to the camera. In which case you may get some clues from seeing what lens profile, aperture, etc show up in the EXIF.

Thanks, but I forgot to mention that when it happened I tried your suggestion but the shutter was locked!  I hope you're right though - if it's dirt its easily cleaned rather than having to deal with a poor connection inside the adapter.

I reported yesterday that the camera flashed the image three times when an R 180 ROM mounted with the Leica R-SL adapter.  Cleaning the contacts with alcohol on a cotton bud seemed to fix it.

Came to use the camera today with a R100 ROM and adapter - same flashing image  three times then black.  Mounted/dismounted it and totally black with no settings information showing..  Put the SL 24-90 on and it is still totally black.  Tried three different fully charged batteries and swapped the SD card - still dead.

Its not quite a year old so I guess a call to Leica UK tomorrow is the only option unless anyone has other advice?

Can you access the menus at all ???

If so, try a reset from the menu opions.

If not then a trip to camera hospital sounds likely.

ps. on a workshop earlier this year on of our crews SL started to behave erratically in and then failed after being dropped..... just took black images and nothing would resurrect it. It was given up as dead despite multiple attempts to get it to work. It was eventually sent to Wetzlar ..... but by the time they tested it the camera had resurrected itself and worked perfectly. The superficial body damage cost an arm and a leg to repair though ..... In the old days the advice would have been a sharp tap with a 'birmingham screwdriver'.....
