Reciprocity Posted October 12, 2017 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, I have had my M10 for two weeks and it already has a surprising amount of dust in the VF. I have done a fair amount of work with it at nearly 2K frames in. I will admit to working in some dirty conditions at times but the past two weeks have been relatively low impact in that regard so this is a bit of a head turner. There is one spec in the front on the flocking mask and about half a dozen on the eyepiece end. The big ones (red arrows in photo) are kind of the same color so I am half-wondering if that is not some sort of assembly related goo making the rounds. In any case, this is by far the fastest I have had a clean VF on an M get this dusty. I'm sure Leica would oblige a cleaning but I am most concerned about the fact it got there so fast to begin with. How are most folks faring on the dust front? Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! riswanc Posted October 12, 2017 Share #2 Posted October 12, 2017 Really bad, in just under 2K and and 2 weeks This M supposedly inherit dustproof and weatherproof yet it can’t stand dusty situation My M had been for like 5 months now, unaccounted shutter but certainly close to 8k or more and still ok Instagram @jakontil
jdlaing Posted October 12, 2017 Share #3 Posted October 12, 2017 Make no mistake. They are not dust and weather PROOF. Only RESISTANT.
Tailwagger Posted October 13, 2017 Share #4 Posted October 13, 2017 Doesnt seem right to me. Not quite on your pace, 4 months, 5000+ actuations, in all sorts of weather and no sign of any dust inside the VF.
Reciprocity Posted October 13, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted October 13, 2017 Darn it, I think this might have happened when I switched from a red to a black logo, adjusted my vertical RF alignment. As long as it does not get worse I will live with it for now.

adan Posted October 13, 2017 Share #8 Posted October 13, 2017 I've got one dust speck inside my (silver) M10 eyepiece - about as big as the largest in reciprocity's image. It does look like something that was in the camera to begin with, and eventually migrated to the eyepiece. Appeared probably about 4 months ago (?) I did do extensive shooting at dirt race tracks over the summer - but this speck is white-ish, like recip's, not the brown/tan of racetrack dust. Doesn't interfere with viewing, so I'm ignoring it for now. If I get a second M10 body, I'll send this first one in under warranty as an excuse for a free CLA. pico Posted October 13, 2017 Share #9 Posted October 13, 2017 The diagonal skew of the spots might make it look worse than it is in use. If you can tolerate being without the camera for a while, send it back to Leica. They might fix it and appreciate looking into how it happened. Speaking only for myself, I would put up with it because it does not hurt the sensor image. But that's me. I tolerate M9 corrosion. Best of luck. Reciprocity Posted October 13, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted October 13, 2017 I can live with it for now. I think I did it when I was removing the old adhesive from the red dot in going to the black one and it migrated there. My M240 had a trace when I sold it, my M6 is filthy after two years post CLA and my M3 is spotless after 12 years of regular use post CLA. Go figure. Eric1 Posted October 14, 2017 Share #11 Posted October 14, 2017 mine has no dust, thousands of photos later and many months. my guess is it's in there before and shows up after being jostled around for a bit. i imagine it's pretty hard to keep all dust in any device. dust can also be hard to spot. bocaburger Posted October 15, 2017 Share #12 Posted October 15, 2017 I had a horrible finder dust issue with my film MP because Leica changed from a threaded eyepiece (early M7 and before) to 3 tiny screws with a 1mm gap at 9:00, relying on a new design rubber protector to seal it, which it failed to do. I sealed it up with gasket glue and it was fine thereafter. M8,9 and 240 have been dust-free. Not sure how the M10 eyepiece attachment design compares. I only know it has a larger diameter. jaapv Posted October 15, 2017 Share #13 Posted October 15, 2017 It is not impossible; the body assembly isn’t in a clean room. Dust tends to migrate. It should be a quick repair.
chris_tribble Posted October 15, 2017 Share #14 Posted October 15, 2017 (edited) The M digitals are all vulnerable to dust on the sensor. All it requires is a grown up response to looking after your kit. I'd strongly recommend getting: A good blower brush (https://visibledust.com/products/zee-pro-sensor-cleaning-bulb-blower-for-digital-camera/) Visible Dust brush (https://visibledust.com/products/arctic-butterfly-724-super-bright-sensor-brush-for-cleaning-sensor-of-digital-cameras/ + a sensor loupe (https://visibledust.com/products/quasar-plus-sensor-loupe-7x-magnifier-improved-focusing-system/). Under most circumstances, dry cleaning is more than sufficient to keep a sensor pristine. I have no link to this company! There stuff is not cheap, but it works + means you can live with a a digital camera without feeling shocked or frightened of a bit of dust! Hope this helps... I got my M10 on March and I've used quite a bit, but it is stored 100% of the time in place with no dust and I didn't went to the desert or anything like that...... I'm thinking to send it to Leica to have it cleaned but I'm wondering if it is covered by the warranty. Everything else is working just perfect I love the camera (I'm coming from an M9P). HoyMikey Posted May 24, 2019 Share #19 Posted May 24, 2019 Got my M10 as well, doesn't affect the quality of the image nor any blockage. But it's really annoying. To have this cleaned, it needs to be sent to leica Germany? I got mine in the leica Philippines.

Just like every other camera out there. Yet the M10’s viewfinder fills up with dust in situations where other cameras don’t. I’ve had two M10’s cleaned three times and it still happens. My Sony and Fuji has been used in far dustier and harsher conditions and weather, and they don’t have a single speck of dust in their finders. They are also weather RESISTANT.
