romualdo Posted October 9, 2017 Share #1  Posted October 9, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Just had a nice score from my Sydney contact - an LTM 50mm Rigid Cron with matching head & body serial #'s (1623703) with 51.9 focal length etched into the head plus the number 8 stamped into the back of the infinity tab. I'd say this is a genuine one of the 1160 made between 1960 & 1963 BUT the serial number does not fall into the 6 listed categories/batches listed in Laney & other references - I don't think this is an issue? Based on the serial # & charts, this was supposed to have been manufactured in 1958 - probably not the case though  The lens which is in very nice condition (body & glass) also came with a pristine hood (ITDOO - narrow band early version) I have a couple of questions 1. Why were these lenses made so late in the piece - were they for the IIIg or for people who wanted one of the more modern/better performing lenses of the time to fit onto Barnacks? 2. Regarding the ITDOO hood, will this be compatible (no vignetting?) with the earlier 35mm Summaron (it fits very snugly/perfectly on the SOOGZ adaptor) - I'd rather use this an not search for the original FOOKH/12505 hood. luigi bertolotti Posted October 9, 2017 Share #2  Posted October 9, 2017 (edited) It is generally reported, by the well known historician's books, that Leitz did made available and orderable as single unit the focusing mount of the rigid Summicron 50 : this, as you say above, to allow people who bought Summicron 50 with M cameras to use their new 50 on their "old" Barnacks. This could be well the origin of your lens; but, as always, the published data about lenses and their variants must not be taken as the Bible... rigid Summicrons in screw Mount are reported not far from the batch to which your one belongs... exceptions can easily exist... : anyway, compliments ! It's a very desirable and uncommon item, indeed  The ITDOO was made to fit the late Summaron 3,5 with E39 Mount.. but I think it fits well, with no vignetting, also the A36 version with the SOOGZ flter adapter.. even if it adds a bit of length... I never tested this combo, but have the needed devices and could try to verify... romualdo Posted October 9, 2017 Author Share #5 Â Posted October 9, 2017 Mine s/n 1 706 xxx is dated 1959 the distance scale is in meter. ( feet is refered 11018 meter is 11518 ) That was a further question I was going to ask - regarding the scale - I had only seen feet from other online images of this lens - was wondering if there were meter versions & so there are. Were there both feet & meter versions as in some of the bayonet/M rigid crons?

Yes, the late items in SM do have feet/meters... see for example WestLicht auction of May 2011 : s/n 1.9xx.xxx, screw mount, dual scale.

alan mcfall Posted October 9, 2017 Share #8  Posted October 9, 2017 I have recorded these, so yours may be an early one in the late 16237xx-1624000 production. Not sure if it is a continuous lot, but seems pretty consistent.   1623716 1623731 1623749 1623768 1623776 1623779 1623780 1623800 1623878 1623949 1623982  I have the following rigid screw mount summicrons in my collection. 1606563 1707156 1707251  It seems the major groupings for these lenses are: 1599xxx, 1606xxx, 16237xx, 1704xxx and 1707xxx. But, as well stated above, there are many others that would seem to be more individually random or special order. Anywhere from 1403655 to 2279568. Just my first and last recorded.

Pyrogallol Posted July 1, 2022 Share #14  Posted July 1, 2022 Found this old thread to say that I just bought a screw 50mm rigid Summicron. I had been looking at it for sale for the past year without being able to justify buying it. But this week I traded in a box full of cameras and lenses to help pay for it. Still can’t justify it. Serial number 1599978 with matching number on the mount. Welcome, dear visitor!
