M10 Thumb grip review

Hello fellow M10 shooters. For some reason i purchased all of the thumb grips for my M10. I had the Thumbs up for my M8 and M240 as well as my Xpro2 and knew I needed it for my M10.

 

At the time of launch there was none available so I said to myself that I would purchase the first available one. That ended up being the Match Technical Thumbs up EP-MX. This model was slightly different than the previous version for the M240 as it had a small allen head set screw to keep grip from wiggling. (although I have never experienced a wiggle before.)

 

I was unhappy with this version as you needed to carry around a allen key to remove it and attached the Leica EVF. If you dont need the EVF then this version is awesome.

 

When the leica version of the grip became available I purchased that one as it had no screw.  This version was nice but the curve of the grip i feel was modeled to follow the lines of the camera instead of the users thumb but I still used this one most of the time. 

 

When Match Technically finally came out with a version that was like the old M240  one I purchased that one and I have been using it ever since. It is the EP-MXF.

Thanks for the mini review. I have the Leica version (the one that follows the curve of the camera, but not of the thumb). I know there is a thumb grip out there that attaches to the camera by double sided tape, so it keeps the hot shoe free. I wonder if anyone has an opinion of that thumb grip.

I have both the Match Technical and Leica thumb grip. Prolong usage weakens the "springs" in the hot shoe resulting in a loose fit for the evf or the flash.

Anyone else experience this problem?

I’ve only been using the Leica thumb grip for two months, but when I use the flash it’s very difficult to remove. So, the opposite is true for me.

The “Thumbie” fastens that way and is a very good thumb grip. It is marketed by one of the members here.

The Thumbie is brilliant. I have used them on my M9 and M240's. When I got my M10 I just removed one from the M240 and used the spare piece of tape that I had in a drawer for three years and put it on my M10, where it will stay.

I am using the Thumbie on my M10 and I realy like it because I can use it together with my EVF.

I've used a Thumbie on my M8, M9P, and M240 but I use the Leica thumb grip on my M10 (eventhough the M240 would fit).  I tried the Leica thumb grip on my M10 and just liked it so until I get irritated by having to remove the thumb grip to use the e-Visoflex (which I rarely use) I'll continue to use the Leica one.  My M10 is satin chrome and the thumb grip matches the finish very nicely although that wouldn't feature in my decision on which to use.

All right, i'm convinced. Even though I own a Leica thumb grip, I sent an email to that Thumbie guy. I'll wait to hear back from him.

The Thumbie is the way to go………works perfectly for me, no need to remove it to use the EVF or a clip-on OVF, and no problems with the adhesion. I "repurposed" the one from the second M240 that I sold when I got the M10.

I had that problem a few years ago and dealt with the manufacturer Steve Barnett (member 250SWB here) over it and it turned out to be a faulty batch of adhesive tape, which he's eliminated.  Just so you know, the Thumbie didn't part company with the camera and in hot weather it felt a bit spongy and moved a little on the camera body.

That is correct. Hot and humid is too much for it - think rain forest. And you'll never find it again in the undergrowth...

It uses a double faced tape and is very secure as well as easy to remove if needed.

I don't live in extreme humidity but my M's have certainly been there, often. My Thumbie has been all over the world and never looked like moving. Last year we had several days here in the 40's (Celsius) and I used my M's with absolutely no Thumbie issues. 

 

It's absolutely essential that you make sure the surface of the camera is clean though. Like spotless. Even a fingerprint is enough to compromise the adhesion a bit. I cleaned my M thoroughly with a damp soapy cloth and wiped it dry before adhering the Thumbie.

Tried them all . . And they’re all excellent, nearlyl as good as not bothering, my cameras are currently naked, no half case, no softee, no thumbs up.
