Not so good weather today so I did some focus stacking experiments inside. I found two nice big flowers for that

The first is an Amaryllis

Here's another one that took a bit more work, somehow Helicon Focus created a very blotchy/ugly background. So I processed one image without Helicon and combined the smooth background with the stacked/sharp flower with some masking between the two layers. I think it came out OK in the end and I like this composition better that that of the other Dahlia shot.

I like your stacking results very much.  I do my stacking with a 007 and 120 S with the Image Shuttle and Zerene Stacker, which varies the focus by the lens helicoid.  I have been led to believe that that works best with flowers as you and I do.  I attempt to achieve the smallest distance increment (.01 ft).  My question for you is, "What is the distance increment you dial in on your macro rail?

Thanks traveller11, I've heard about Zerene but I've never tried it yet. I don't do that much stacking so learning one program is enough for me. I've also used the "change focus on the lens" method when I had no macro rail with me (usually outside in the field shooting mushrooms) but I find it much harder to achieve consistent small steps that way.

In these two cases the object distance was about 80 cm. I then use a tool on my phone called "HyperFocalPro" to determine the depth of field. I then take increments on my macro rail of somewhere between 1/6 and 1/4 of the total depth of field the tool gives me. It's probably too many steps but so be it. I know I can get away with less since most of the time only using half the frames give an almost identical stacked result. Only when there is parallax or great depth differences close to each other in the subject you get better results with more frames. In these specific cases I used a 1 cm step for the amaryllis (@ f11) and a 2 mm step for both the dahlia shots (@ f4.0 and f5.6). So it's very unscientific but it seems to work.
