sillbeers15 Posted September 30, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 30, 2017 (edited) The grip offers vertical shooting convinence & ergonomics. Four items get vertical format: 1 Shutter Release Trigger button; 2 Top dial; 3 Rear wheel; 4 Rear joystick. Your top plate OLED display will display 2 batteries instead of 2 after grip installed and camera draws power from grip battery till it is drained completely before drawing power from battery in camera body. geetee1972 Posted September 30, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 30, 2017 As silbeers commented, it makes shooting in portrait much easier. If you don't tend to shoot in portrait much, then I guess it's largely pointless especially given how much is costs.
lx1713 Posted September 30, 2017 Share #4 Posted September 30, 2017 (edited) For myself, the grip is a must for long stretches of shooting. I come from a Canon 1D & 5D with the 1D being the preferred body, so the SL is a lightweight comparatively speaking. If you have back to back shooting over several days, it's beneficial to your wrist, elbows and back to keep the weight close to your body. And for the weight to be substantial enough. I rarely shoot in a portrait mode in events but as others mentioned, in straight portraits, it's great balance. Then I would normally remove the Arca Swiss plate attached for other purposes. For video, product and group photography, more relaxed stuff, I work without the grip. Overall, I still find the 1D's balance to be superior but it's probably due to muscle memory from nearly 2 decades of carrying them. LD_50 Posted September 30, 2017 Share #5 Posted September 30, 2017 (edited) Try it out. If you like it, use it. If you don’t, get rid of it. I prefer the RRS bottom plate for a slightly taller grip. Edited September 30, 2017 by LD_50
FlashGordonPhotography Posted September 30, 2017 Share #6 Posted September 30, 2017 I have one. Never use it. Both my SL's have RRS grips on them now and that's ideal, for me. Unlike some cameras when I use the vertical orientation the shutter button doesn't fall in the same place as shooting horizontally so I find I have a moment of hesitation while I adjust how I hold the camera. That's off putting enough that I don't use it. I shoot a lot of verticals and have completely adjusted to not having a vertical shutter release for normal shooting. The other thing is that my bag is significantly smaller when I don't have to pack with grips on the cameras. I only keep it because it will probably be useful in a studio environment. It's been closed for a clean up. When it opens again in a few weeks I'll decide if I will keep or dump the grip. Right now it's probably going to go. relms Posted September 30, 2017 Share #7 Posted September 30, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) My main objection to the SL grip is the bulk it adds to the camera; however, I do like the extra depth provided by the RRS L-bracket, which looks and feels like a natural extension of the camera's body without the bulk.
John Black Posted October 1, 2017 Share #8 Posted October 1, 2017 Bought the grip, tried it awhile and ended up selling it. I used the Canon 1Ds, 1Ds2 and 1Ds3 for 7-8 years. The SL with a grip felt heavier. Add the 24-90mm SL to the mix, and things start to get really heavy. The RRS base plate is a great option. It extends the grip just enough and the RSS rounded edges are more comfortable vs. the sharper edges on the SL's body. I leave it on the SL all the time.
leica1215 Posted October 1, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted October 1, 2017 it seems handgrip are not in much use, I just got it, I will return it. Btw the rrs plate has nothing to do with vertical shoot, you just like it bc the better grip ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ramarren Posted October 1, 2017 Share #10 Posted October 1, 2017 I'm considering buying the RRS plate mainly because it allows me to fit a wrist strap that is anchored at the right place, and I have a tripod adapter on the camera 90% of the time anyway. I've bought and then sold enough battery grips that I know I'll never want the one for the SL.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Yes, because of the better grip (four fingers instead of three, giving the little finger a place to land), and with the optional vertical bracket for the RRS base plate, I can quickly attach and detach the camera vertically or horizontally to my tripod. lx1713 Posted October 2, 2017 Share #15 Posted October 2, 2017 That makes sense, though I still don’t see why you’re concerned with what others think of it. Because of insights and wisdom and broader experience maybe Anyway this happened to be something that is very subjective. I hate to work without the grip on long periods of constant handling but others are really okay with that. OP just needs a broader feedback outside of his experience. Have to say that I'm using the grip less often as the jobs I take on becomes less strenuous.
