stunsworth Posted September 28, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 28, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I upgraded to High Sierra earlier this evening and now many of my raw files fail to open in Lightroom. When I click on an image in the catalogue there's a message 'There was an error working with this file". The volumes that the files sit on are all still Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Things seemed ok immediately after the update, so I don't know what's happened. Not sure if it's a Lightroom issue or the OS. I've run the Disk Utility and that found no errors on the drive. I guess I'll be rolling back the OS tomorrow if I can't think of anything else overnight.
Advertisement Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Hi stunsworth, Take a look here There seems to be a problem with Mac High Sierra and RAW files. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
prk60091 Posted September 28, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 28, 2017 Is it the drive that the os is on? I read something yesterday that there was an issue for images that sit on NAS or attached drives. I don’t keep my images on anything other than the drive that the os sits on so I did not pay careful attention to that article
wlaidlaw Posted September 28, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 28, 2017 Steve, I can certainly open DNG's that are sitting on my SSD in both LR (CC 2015.12) and C1 (10.2). Capture One took a very long time setting up hardware acceleration on my 2016 MBP. Are you using a rotating or fusion drive? If so there is a known problem see here: https://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2017/09/afs-macos-high-sierra-fusion-drives/ . Luckily my 2016 MBP is SSD and I converted my 2011 Mac Mini to a 2TB SSD earlier this year from a fusion. There is also a problem with one of the third party SSD blade makers - I think it was written up in Macrumours today or yesterday. stunsworth Posted September 28, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted September 28, 2017 No, it’s an external drive. At the moment I’ve no idea if it’s the drive, the OS or Lightroom. A RAW file I was working on immediately after the High Sierra update now won’t open - and if I right click on the file and try to open it directly in Photoshop I also get an error in Photoshop. So perhaps it’s not a Lightroom issue.

stunsworth Posted September 28, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted September 28, 2017 Wilson, it’s a rotating disk. I may buy another drive tomorrow and copy the files - probably from the Timemachine backup.
wlaidlaw Posted September 28, 2017 Share #7 Posted September 28, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Steve, As a further test, I just copied some M240 DNG's to my Apple Time Capsule external wifi connected drive. LR could see them with no problem. The Time Capsule is a 3TB rotating drive. Wilson Edited September 28, 2017 by wlaidlaw
wlaidlaw Posted September 28, 2017 Share #8 Posted September 28, 2017 Steve, OK did one last test. On my Mac Mini, which has a wired USB 4TB Seagate Time Capsule rotating drive, I looked to see if LR could see and open DNG's from that and it could with no problems. stunsworth Posted September 28, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted September 28, 2017 Thanks Wilson, I’ll do some more testing in the morning with the assumption it’s a disk problem.
stunsworth Posted September 29, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted September 29, 2017 For what ever reason, the only files that seem to be affected this morning are the ones from my last import. The Lightroom catalogue had lost all the entries in the 'Folders' drop down, so I'm rebuilding a new catalogue and will re-import the photos from the corrupted previous import. zeitz Posted September 29, 2017 Share #11 Posted September 29, 2017 I don't use Lightroom because of the catalogue / import nonsense. Both my RAIDS, Air Port Time Capsule, and my external hard drive work perfectly with High Sierra. Photoshop / Bridge / ACR, the Nikon software and Photos also work perfectly.
