Thank you - you're very kind. It's my friend - he has a lot of stuff going on at the moment. When I shot this, I thought he was looking into the lens - it was a posed picture. Actually think it's a better shot because he's not. He likes the image, and is quite happy for it to be shared. We couldn't initially identify what it was about it, but eventually realised that there's nothing especially to date it. There's a timeless quality to it.

Your instinct to include the shadows on the wall in the upper margins of the composition give this portrait an emotional/psychological quality that draws us to the moment. While it was a “posed picture,“ there is an unposed quality in the expression, kind of a preoccupied mind wandering.

I keep wondering about the crop. I've tried several versions and this is the one that I'm happiest with.
