reddot925 Posted September 23, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 23, 2017 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I was in a Leica store in Europe and decided to buy this mint Noctilux with red numbers, the store knew it was not regular version but not the exact edition, they had it around 10% above what a regular version would sell for. The boxes and serial numbers all matched up but no mention of what set it came with, anyone has any idea? The serial is 431xxxz. Thank you Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 Hi reddot925, Take a look here Noctilux 0.95 with Red numbering. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted September 23, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 23, 2017 Maybe the previous owner repainted the numbers? It's not difficult to do.
jaapv Posted September 23, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 23, 2017 Somebody wanted to pretend it was a Zeiss lens and got out some red paint. Forgot to make the dot blue, though.., I would never pay a surcharge for this.

reddot925 Posted September 23, 2017 Author Share #5 Posted September 23, 2017 I’m already making a profit on it. Just would like to know what I’m selling. I made quite a bit of profit selling Summilux 35mm Asph with orange numbers which was part of India edition. It doesn’t look repainted , leica often makes many countries specific editions so I’m thinking it’s one of those.

After all, it's a lens that left the factory not many years ago... some important dealerships do ask and obtain, time to time, some "specials"... and this one is fine to see... not a rough fantasy repaint... On the other hand, someone should have to pay a surcharge every time a person replies a question that they have absolutely no idea of the answer Edited September 23, 2017 by reddot925
reddot925 Posted September 23, 2017 Author Share #10 Posted September 23, 2017 This was the Summilux India edition I mentioned, somebody split the set so I bought just the lens when I was in Hong Kong, I already had the regular version Summilux 35mm Asph which I adore, so end up selling this orange scale and made a good bit of change for it. Not expecting to make money on this Noctilux, I bought it simply because I like it and after a bit of discount it was still less that new in box regular version. Welcome, dear visitor! Opinion is divided on this type of thing. Some people, like myself, don't like these special editions, which are cosmetic variations at best. I have a large collection of Leica cameras and lenses going back to the 1920s and only one of them is a special edition ( which I bought because it was a nice example of a model I did not have already). There is a feeling that such special editions give Leica cameras a bad name as just being 'male jewellery'. On the other hand, despite this viewpoint, Leica continues to make special editions. So there must be a market out there for this type of thing. I believe that Leica also knows that a lot of Leica users feel as I do and are not interested in special editions. Each to his own etc. William

These special editions used to excite me more (limited production models still do to an extent) but now I would look only at something I don't already have and the only reason I accepted this Noctilux's very small price premium over a used regular version is because I personally like it and from past experience these items have a good resale appeal should I no longer have a need for it. Ozytripper Posted September 24, 2017 Share #13 Posted September 24, 2017 I have seen a Black Paint version with red lettering but yours look like a black chrome The black paint version comes as a set with a matching 35mm and a black paint body as well (i only saw the 2 lens set and not the body)

reddot925 Posted September 24, 2017 Author Share #15 Posted September 24, 2017 Thanks Ozytripper, yes I believe that's the China 70th independent anniversary edition, now I think it's around US$35000-40000 for the set with the MP, Summicron 35 and Noctilux, all black paint (while an MP with just Summicron set both black paint is around $8000, I guess that makes just that noctilux close to $30,000) I saw one in Leica Store Hong Kong, it's nice but I can't imagine using that black paint on the street, every bump or scratch would probably be rather painful. jaapv Posted September 24, 2017 Share #16 Posted September 24, 2017 I don't think anyone is asking you to pay a surcharge for this. On the other hand, someone should have to pay a surcharge every time a person replies a question that they have absolutely no idea of the answer Somebody did ask for a surcharge according to your post: they had it around 10% above what a regular version would sell for. Whatever you say, it still does not look like a value-enhancing modification. I personally would prefer it on a black chrome body, as it matches the shutter dial, but I still don't believe it is some kind of edition, and I agree with Ian that it is quite possibly DIY. OTOH, I do know that Leica will paint about any colour in engravings if asked nicely, unless they happen to have run out of the requested paint - as occurred to me once. reddot925 Posted September 24, 2017 Author Share #18 Posted September 24, 2017 (edited) Anything is possible but it doesn't look like a repaint, also it's from a previous customer of the store that they know well so I personally doubt it. More importantly as Luigi said it's unlikely on a rather 'new' item. This lens mint condition was selling in the Leica store for around 6-700 euro more than usual used Noctilux 0.95 I see other places and online. For this price they threw in a couple of ND filters and free insured international shipping for me as I didn't want to hand carry it. This and the benefit of buying from a well known store made it an easy decision for me. I didn't see the need to explain this but I feel nowadays too many people jump straight to 'it's my money and I'll buy what I want' which just turns the conversation away from logic and civility too quickly. jaapv Posted September 24, 2017 Share #20 Posted September 24, 2017 Well, you brought the topic up and mentioned the extra cost. It is not totally weird that it get discussed in a forum. Threads would be rather short otherwise.
