GPS question

Does anyone know if the GPS is active on the camera whether or not live-view is switched on?

In other words, if one is not using LV, is the GPS unit not acquiring satellites and does that mean that any time you switch LV back on, it has to start all over again?

Don't worry, I found it.

I should have looked around a bit before I asked the question.

The answer is that the GPS is working as long as the camera is switched on whether or not it is in live view

Pressing the information button will show a little GPS icon if it is working.

In fact I've just tried it out for the first time.

It took about seven or eight minutes to acquire the satellites. This worried me but given that it is the first time, maybe it's not a problem.

After that I tried switching off the camera several times and even removing the EVF and eventually switching the camera off for a full five minutes and each time I replaced the EVF or switch the camera back on, it acquired the satellites immediately.

I'll see what happens tomorrow after the camera has been switched off for several hours.

Once the initial lock has bee achieved it gets faster.

Just to endorse Jim's post...

GPS does work like he says.

I've used Garmin a lot on yachts and driving...

They will fix quickly if you're in the same close location, but can take, sometimes, many minutes when you switch off, and then travel and want a new place.

So it's not always convenient for cameras, or other "things"...far too long, depending how you are using the GPS..

I try to remember where I've been and add GPS coordinates in Lightroom. I don't need position accurate up to a meter. It's more the general area (like in with park or street). Or I carry a separate GPS tracker which lasts a couple of days and pull the GPS data from that (and merge them in LR).

Hello!

I recently purchased a M10 and the Leica Visoflex (Typ 020) Electronic Viewfinder. It doesn't appear that the GPS data has been recorded in the DNG files. I use Lightroom for editing and the data isn't present in the metadata. Is there a trick to this?

Thanks!

Interesting. Could you maybe explain a bit more in detail how you proceed with bringing that data into lightroom.

All of the GPS fields are blank:

How is this possible? This is a disgrace. Pls keep posting.

I use the Lightroom Map Module to backtrace the places I took photos.

I use an app on my phone rather than Visoflex as the mobile phone is quicker to get a fix for gps signals rather than visfolex and also Visoflex drains the battery pretty quick.

I think the OP wants to discover why his custom GPS isn’t performing according to the Leica spec and isn’t seeking a non-leica solution. After all, he’s bought a Leica solution that is designed to work. Saying that, we need to be sure that he isn’t operating the feature incorrectly. Existing owners and users should engage with ideas.

First thing comes to mind with fields like that is GPS was off or didn’t get a lock on enough satellites.

The GPS was on and the M10 showed the active satellite icon in the viewfinder. I set the camera not to turn off for a longer duration to make sure the satellites were acquired. I also set the M10 preference to use the GPS date/time to set the clock. The image timestamps were accurate.

Thanks, lucerne. You're right. I have other means to record GPS coordinates and create .GPX files to marry with image timestamps for precise location information in Lightroom, but I purchased the Visoflex to integrate it all.
