"Bar code" stripes instead of Menu display

Turned on my m8.2 the other day, pressed Menu button and got a display of "bar code" looking stripes. No menu access. Now when I power on the camera, stripes appear in the display. No Menu access. Takes photos but I have no access to anything via menu. I did a firmware upgrade to 2.024 but it had no effect. Do I now have an expensive door stop? I have found various discussions regarding this problem but no resolution. It might be the LCD display which apparently cannot be replaced since none are available. I have a Canon A710s "point and shoot" with 6x zoom that is 10 years old and it works as good as it did when I first took it out of the box.

It might be a relatively simple problem if you're lucky; contact Leica.
