hirohhhh Posted September 12, 2017 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have SL and Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90 lens and I'm frequently taking photos of my children who can't be steady for a second - they're constantly moving, running, turning around and it's impossible for me to take a sharp picture if it's not really bright light. Taking pictures inside is almost impossible and I'm not very satisfied with the result outside, on the natural light when it's not bright day. I do not use any lights, or flash, but now I'm seriously considering buying some, mainly for this purpose. I usually take photos on manual mode, but I found better results in the situation with low light conditions and fast moving objects when set the camera to automatic, or setting a very high ISO which, of course results in a very grainy photos (eg, anything lower than 3200 end up as not sharp). I didn't have much experience with mirrorless and DSLR cameras before I bought this one, but I'm just curious to hear from you, how fast is this lens comparing to others, is there anything I'm doing wrong, or can do better to improve the results, or should I just simply invest in flash or light? Thank you.

LD_50 Posted September 12, 2017 Share #2 Posted September 12, 2017 If you're trying to use autofocus, the camera will struggle in low light with its contrast detect system. If you're using manual focus with small enough aperture to achieve enough DOF, you need to ensure you have a high enough shutter speed to freeze motion. If the combination of adequate DOF (smaller aperture) and high shutter speed results in images that are too dark, you'll need that higher ISO (and resulting grain) or lighting. I would suggest reading a few photography guidebooks before considering the equipment in use. It's all about aperture, shutter speed and ISO. The SL is as good as any other camera with the right settings (other than perhaps the AF system isn't as good in this setting as many PDAF systems).
