Bryce Canyon, Utah

Wonderful place...................but simply overwhelmed this year by tourists.

As with most of the Utah parks, the best time by far photography here is early in the morning, best to be in place before sunrise. The hoodoos, as the sand stone pillars are called, reflect the various colors of the rising sun differently as the sun gets higher & higher above the horizon, and for a few seconds each morning one would swear some of the formations are lighted from within.

A magical place and well worth a visit, but not at this time of the year.....................way too crowded and much too hot. Best enjoyed while hiking the miles & miles of trails in the amphitheaters below the rim, but make sure you bring water.

As John Muir once noted - " Zion is the heavy oak table, Bryce is the delicate lace tablecloth". You could spend a year there shooting every day and come away with unforgettable images.

Pp'd in LR 5 with minimal tweaking - the sandstone really does take on the saturated orange glow this image displays when the first rays of the sun strike them..

Sunrise..............about the only time it's not overrun with people. Taken from a spot called 'Sunset point', ironically.

John,  The best time to photograph Bryce Canyon, Zion, Grand Canyon and Arches etc is during the winter.  Hardly any people, often next to none.  I go these parks only in the winter, mostly mid-January to early March.  Great colors and contrast with the snow.  Snow on the hoodoos at Bryce makes a winter wonderland.  Plus the park now keeps one lodge open year round.  Spring, summer and early autumn is a madhouse with tourists.  r/ Mark
