SilentShutter Posted September 5, 2017 Share #3 Posted September 5, 2017 The theme reminds me at the best documentation I ever saw about war. The reason I was so impressed was the way Ken Burns did it Personal letters and these striking portraits from the soldiers made just at the beginning of photography created a style I never saw before I really recommend it: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/civil-war/

Very well done and probably an accurate picture of how horrible war can be. Our local PBS station isn't airing the HD version for some reason. I think the guy in the back has been stealing rations. He is no longer able to button his jacket. Edited September 5, 2017 by fotografr

True. I think the guy in the back has been stealing rations. He is no longer able to button his jacket. Brent, great photo. The army then is like it is now - Hurry and Wait. The Ken Burns series was awesome. Civil War re-enactors are interesting. They are almost a cult. If you want to know about the re-enactors there is an excellent book called Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz. Some re-enactors take their roles to extremes, like not bathing the week before an event, spending thousands for replica clothes and regalia, and dieting so they look like they are literally starving (unlike the sergeant in the photo). There is a circuit they follow over several weekends at most of the famous battlegrounds of the war. There are a couple of re-enactments near me each year and the actors are interesting and not afraid of a camera. Ray

Yesterday I run into another Ken Burns production I spotted at ARTE About the Vietnam War - you should give it a try too !
