90 apo vs 75 apo

I have used them both carries them both. Given the high performance of both I think the biggest factor difference is size/weight. Given that if you walk and carry as I do the 75 is a winner. Going out for the day with a 35 75 cron kit feels right in most any situation.

Anickpick, what else do you not like about the close performance of the 90, and do you find the 75 cron to be better in that regard?

Well, I think both lenses draw beautifully.

From about 3 meters until infinity, the 90 apo is simply perfect.

The 75 apo is superb at all distances. The way it "draws" to my eyes is somewhere in between the 50 Lux and the 50 Apo Summicron. It is one of my very favorite lenses.

Having said this, the portrait at display at my mother's funeral was taken with the 90 Apo (from approx 1 - 1.5 meters) ;) while not pixel-peeking-perfect, it was the best portrait I had made of her (and there had been many over the years).

Well after shooting with the 90 for another day, I think I'm sold on the focal length for portraiture.  I also feel like the 75mm apo wouldn't get used much since I already own the 50 apo.  Now I have to decide whether I want the 90 apo or pre-apo.  I've been reading a lot about the differences, and for female portraiture I certainly prefer the rendering of the pre-apo.  The bokeh is also lovely on that model, although there are times when the 90 apo's bokeh blows me away (and times where it is underwhelming).  For street photography and male portraiture I think I'd prefer the added resolution of the 90 apo, and it probably would perform better stopped down for landscapes as well.

The 90 Summicron is designed to be a general-purpose lens with a large aperture for dim light, and a longer reach than a 50mm. It is not strictly "a portrait lens" - although that is one of the functions it might fulfill.

Leica describes it as "ideal for photojournalism, theatre and even portrait photography." Portraits being rather an afterthought, in that phrasing.

I had the APO-Summicron-M 75 ASPH (to give it a full title), and really struggled focusing it.  Maybe I had a bad example, but I never gelled with it.  I bought the 75 Summilux, and loved it at first instance (soft wide open, tack sharp stopped down); I added the AA 90 Summicron, and used it rarely, so I sold it.
