Hello

Here's a sling L plate set up I've found effective for using the SL with the big 90-280.  Very comfortable and full adjustable. The set up uses the full dedicated Leica SL L Plate by Really Right Stuff, a Really Right Stuff B2 FABN with 38mm Knob, one Joby Pro Strap, and a Joby Camera Tether for security.

I like this set up as I can carry the SL with the 90-280 for long periods. The sling is wide enough to support the camera and lens weight while providing sufficient adjustability to suspend the camera set-up at different heights to accommodate walking, standing or other positions.  The B2 FABN provides the option of removing the sling outright to use the L Plate either horizontally or vertically with a monopod or tripod.  The tether provides a safety net in the un-likely event the B2 FABN slides off the L plate rails.

Works great.  Infinitely better than the stock Leica strap in my opinion.

I might be more concerned that the strap works loose from the FABN. Some loctite might be wise. Two options without requiring a somewhat awkward FABN would be either the Magpul quick detaching strap available from RRS that connects directly to their SL L-plate, or the Peak Design Slide strap that uses a light but secure quick detach connector piece that can be used on the camera or the L- plate.

Regarding sling strap, I use a solution close to what Leicalifer and Jeff discuss above.

My favorite solution is to use the dedicated RRS Leica SL L Plate with the Magpul Gen2 MS4 dual QD sling strap available from RRS

With big lenses like the 90-280, I would lock one of the two QD attachments from the Magpul sling under the camera (on the SL L Plate) and the other under the lens foot (equipped with an Arca plate) thanks to a RRS B2-FABN-Micro.

Another solution to attach the QD to the lens foot is the RRS BDQS. It is safer than the B2-FABN-Micro but is not convenient if you want to be able to attach your lens foot on a tripod head.

That's why I prefer the RRS B2-FABN-Micro as I use it at the same time as a stopper to attach the lens foot + Arca plate right on the balance point of the camera + lens on a Gimbal head without having to fumble to balance it.

I mainly use that setup on a Canon 5D MK IV and big lenses.

I added RRS Pod QD Collars on my tripod to standardise my straps.

I have modified all my straps to use the RRS QD mounts. I removed the original clips from my Peak Design and Holdfast straps and they now have QD mounts on them. They now all directly attach to the RRS base plate.

For the 90-280 I removed the foot and replaced it with an RRS BDQS plate. This also has a QD mount in it as well as an Arca Swiss plate for tripod use. It's also a lower profile than the original plate and does not foul when using my D4 head.

I have a few cameras without RRS plate but with Arca Swiss plates on them (XPro2, Leica S, Olympus PenF) For these I use a B2 FABN Micro to make them QD compatible.

I don't like webbing style slip straps. That's why I modified my Rapid Straps instead which are proper sling straps with a padded shoulder as well as my leather Holdfast straps.

Hi Gordon ... what goes on the 90-280's foot? I cannot find information on RRS BDQS plate on their website ... thank you.

Arguably, the Magpul sling is super tough and very adjustable. The push button attachment is quick and secure. Thousands are in use daily by law enforcement and professional war fighters everywhere.

Only issue for me is it is a little too thick for my camera application; works great on a carbine loaded down with full magazines, optics, illuminator, light and suppressor (10 plus pounds). Also handy too as it won't break if you have to be dragged in a hurry with it around your body. Works great running, standing, sitting and prone; wet or dry, and in/out of vehicles, boats and aircraft. Use it with complete confidence.

However me, I don't see that mission requirement for my camera sling set up. For me comfort and adjustability are key. The Joby strap is wide enough to distribute the load, adjustable without having to use two hands manipulating sling keepers and thin enough to breathe and not chafe.

Just my thoughts.

It's certainly correct that comfort is not the Magpul sling's strongest selling point ;) . But if you have a long tele (say 400mm f2.8, 500mm f4, or 600mm f4) on one of the bigger DSLRs, it is convenient to have a sling system that can be safely used for such a rather big/heavy camera-lens combo, in addition to e.g. SL+90-280.
