Hi,

For the last few days, I have a problem with signing in. Although I click the box for the site to remember me, I keep on being asked to enter username and password every time I revisit the site. Will someone kindly suggest a remedy?

Thanks

Paul

Hello Paul,

The purpose of the "Remember Me" is:

Checking the "Remember Me" box means that you are allowing The Leica Forum to attach "Cookies" to you as you "browse" thru the Forum so that they can analyze what you are looking at & so on.

When you  "click" the Icon at the top right of each page marked "Sign Out" to disconnect: This removes the "Cookies" so that they do NOT travel with you after you leave.

The Leica Forum recommends that you do NOT "click" the "Remember Me" if you are using any type of shared connection.

Clicking "Remember Me" does NOT keep you connected after you leave, You must sign in again each time you come.

Best Regards,

Michael

Michael,

I'm afraid this is wholly incorrect.

When "remember me" is active, the forum will not require you to identify yourself for your next visit. You don't sign in again. There are very few exceptions, notably when the forum has undergone some maintenance work on the server in Germany.

As you correctly mention above, this is done by using cookies which are stored on your computer in your user profile.

The main purpose of a cookie is to enable the server to keep track of your session. The forum does not need cookies to track your activities within the forum. It can use the address of your computer for this purpose. Every request your browser sends to any site in the internet contains the IP address of your PC.

Are you sure of that, Philipp? It appears to me to be a very leaky system. People use proxy servers, VPNs, providers twiddle IP addresses around, access the forum from different locations, devices and WiFi points, etc.

I use a VPN regularly and the forum has a long list of IP addresses for me, yet autologin works without fail.

Yes, I am.

There seems to be a bit of a confusion. Autologin replies wholly and completely on the cookies. I have the cookies to match on each of the three or four computers I regularly use to access the forum. I have to log in but rarely. The last time I had to do so was a few weeks ago when some major maintenance was done.

Keeping track of the pages you visit and things you enter during one session can be done by just keeping track of your IP address. I don't believe that many web servers actually do that as using cookies is much more simple for the software and a bit more robust.

It seems possible for a computer to change its IP address during the course of one session; I would have to look into the documentation for the various protocols, but I am too lazy to do so.

I have occasionally had this problem before (failure to login automatically). Ticking 'remember me' on these occasions doesn't make a difference. I use Chrome as my browser, and it usually asks if it wants me to remember a password; for LUF I agree to this (it is not as safety critical as my bank passwords). However this usually does not automatically log me in either - it just presents me with a login screen with my password filled in - I still have to click 'login'.

Eventually, after a few days or so, the different systems seem to remember me again and I find myself automatically logged in. It all seems a bit random!

... When I used to "click" the "Remember Me" in the past: I ALWAYS had a blank screen when I returned to the Forum the next time. As if I had just arrived "from Jupiter". ...

Can you be certain that you didn't, Michael?  Alien abductions are all the rage in science fiction breaking news these days.

Pete.
