What is with Leica?????

It sure would be nice if Leica would get its head out of its collective chocolate wizway.   I long for the time when Leica had the M and the SL, two cameras.  I would be satisfied with the M and the S, but they have stagnated on the S and keep adding new cameras.  What are they thinking!!!!  Hell, Panasonic (isn't this the company that Leica collaborated with during the early auto-focus time and motorization of the SL) just released a 35mm model with 42.4MP.  Why does Leica think that they know better than what the consumer wants/needs.  Granted as the MP load gets larger so does the resulting picture pixels needing a faster computer, larger memory, bigger harddrives and resulting better software,  but this is an inherit result of going digital. And they continue producing new cameras and lenses, but leave the S with a minor telephoto of 180mm touting about the excellence of their lenses, but relying on other manufacturers to produce longer lenses for them and they produce the sometimes inferior adapters to be able to use them.

When I was on safari in Africa using my SL/MOT and my R4 I used my 400mm F6.8 Telyt almost exclusively on my cameras.  There were only a couple of times I changed and used my 180mm f/2.8.  Personally, I think that they at least owe the consumers a 400mm, which would be about a 300mm on a 35mm camera and maybe a 560mm giving S owners a chance of 400 equivalent for 35mm for their S systems.  Granted, there probably would not be a lot of people lining up to buy them, but they would be there if wanted/needed.  Cotton pick, if they could waste time and resources to make that long lens for the Arab sheikh, why can’t they find time for the rest of us.

OK, I have vented have a great day.

Errr, what is wrong with popping an Apo-Modul system on an SL? Or even better, the 105-280 and Apo-extenders...Taking medium format on Safari is an exercise in futility, have you ever seen the size of the Mamiya 500 and experienced the difficulties of handling a 2x-extended lens, i.e. a slow, immense and unwieldy 1000mm on a 645 camera. I did it - once-. Never again.

And I'd be very interested to learn of a Panasonic 42.4 MP camera. AFAIK their top models are the GH5 and GX8, which have a 20 MP MFT sensor...

Why don't you offer Leica as much money as he Sheikh did and see if you get your lenses?

POP,

Well, I would if I could, except I bought one of the first 100 Leicaflex SLs; plus 35, 50 and 135mm lenses.  I also purchased one of the first Leicaflex SL/MOTs bought in the US and ended up adding 19, 90 180, 400mm lenes to my lineup and then purchased an R4 about 2 years after they came out,  In addition, I have touted what Leica produces since my first Leicaflex SL.   I also have a Leitz enlarging lens for my Durst Enlarger.  I used to have friends with Nikons and Canons that would come to my home just to run my motorized cameras and marvel at how quiet they were to use.  I also dazzled other photo friends at the excellence of the Leica lenses I owned.  So, personally, I feel that I have done more than my required job to have what I would like to use, not what I am told is good enough.  The S should have couple of long lenses available, without Leica expecting me to fork out 2,064,500 dollars to get them.  Its not like I am asking them to produce a 1,600mm f/5.6 APO Telyt-R lens. I am sure they have spent way more than that developing and advertising the 7 other cameras that they now produce.

jaapv,

Lets see.  The modular system that last time I saw one for sale on ebay was about 11,000 dollars.  Then when I looked into it it cost about 6,000 dollars to have it fitted to the s camera per lens because each focusing mount is different, although you buy the lens set for three lenses you can only use two of the lens once they are converted the lens heads are not interchangeable.

I am sorry, I looked through my trash and could not find the article about a 42.4 mp Lumix, i had recently cleared my trash.  I get several photo related newsletters, along with Leica Newsletter, although lately it all seems to be filled with the other cameras they are building.  In any event, I did find articles on a Sony A7R II has 42.4MP on 4K-capable full-frame BSI CMOS sensor.  It is a mirrorless camera.

I have my 1.4x APO-Modul focussing tube adapted by Leica to work with the S, with a Lei-ko adapter and the large head I get a 560mm f4.0. Or I can use the Mamiya 645 300mm f2.8 with a 2 x converter - it is lighter!  However both are manual focus....

john

John,

Is the 560mm f/4 the modular lens head by Leitz?  If it is the Leitz lens head when using the setup is the mounting on the lens solid and where do you mount the tripod if you use one?  Also when using the 300mm f/2.8 with a 2X converter how much is the light fall off of the lens in use?  It all depends on the manual focus mechanism, because on the 400 Telyt it was manual slide focusing.

John,

How much is the 1.4x APO modul focusing tube adapted by Leica  and how much is the limited edition Lei-ko adaptor?  I have never seen the APO modul focusing adaptors for sale with out the accompanying lens heads, plus I thought that the focusing tubes were setup for 280 and 400 and the next one for the 560 and 800mm.  Is this correct for incorrect?

I don't think a (say) 300- 800 zoom for the S would come very cheap either, or for instance a 600 mm prime. Nor do I think there would be many examples sold. Not to mention the size and weight, if the current S and SL lenses are anything to go by.

That is partly correct, as the lens speed makes a difference for the focusing module needed in the overlap. You have a  2.8 280/400, a 4.0/400/560, and a 5.6/560/800. And then you have the lens heads 280/400/560 and 400/560/800.

The combination of lens head and focusing module will create you lens specifications.

Jaap has shown you the system. Leica said that the focussing unit is right on the edge of its limits to work with the S, but can still focus with my M(240) or R9. A Lei-Ko adapter is about 500EUR plus shipping.

There is a sturdy L bracket on both heads, (sadly for others) I bought the last two dedicated plates for them from RRS.  The Mamiya lens does not have much light falloff, it is designed for a larger film size.  I usually use them with a Wimberley head on a very sturdy wooden tripod (large Zone VI).

Sorry, young man, but it is a nice way of saying "their butt or Arse (if your European) or A**; depending on your proclivity.

."

So a totally disgusting way of expressing your anger. And again: 'sorry young man...' , being condescending to someone who has no relation whatsoever to the subject of your anger, but just tries to understand what you're trying to say here. Seems to me forum rules are transgressed here.

Thanks for the support, Otto, but I admit my post was intended to be sarcastic or something! (I did actually know what he was referring to). But as so often, humour, especially weak humour, is not always recognised online.

I am still hopeful that they will come out with a 300 mm-350 mm lens sooner than later.

Anything longer would be too heavy and very expensive... Doubt much of a market..

Albert :):):)

David Farkas has no doubts about Leica delivering an S 350 APO, and possibly longer lenses.

Oh wait, he posted that here in May, 2011.
