spikemozeley Posted August 19, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 19, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey friends, I am looking for a small 50 for my work in more risky situations. Have shot with crons and lux previously but don't always want all the lens with me. Your thoughts on the 2.5 50? I assume it is good. Not looking for analysis or anything technical. Just real world opinions. Thanks!
Advertisement Posted August 19, 2017 Posted August 19, 2017 Hi spikemozeley, Take a look here Summarit 50 2.5. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
elgenper Posted August 19, 2017 Share #2 Posted August 19, 2017 (edited) Well, it IS quite good, in many ways, both optically and mechanically. Only a little "soulless" in comparison with many alternatives; it does its job very well, but without that little "extra". Sold mine, since I prefer my ancient "rigid" Summicron as an alternative to my Summilux Asph. However, it has one BIG advantage in "risky situations": a good and secure metal lens shade that screws on and stays put! Much better mechanical protetion than the usual clip-on or collapsible ones. 01af Posted August 19, 2017 Share #3 Posted August 19, 2017 Oh, the Summarit-M 50 mm 1:2.5 does have a little extra: It has an exceptionally smooth and natural-looking transition from the plane of focus into the out-of-focus blur. Furthermore, it has a pretty low inclination to flare ... not quite as low as the Summarit-M 35 mm, but close.
spikemozeley Posted August 19, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted August 19, 2017 I will be shooting with a Monochrom. It looks like it could be a good option for me. As I work with higher ISO and colour filters I'm not too worried about speed.
a.noctilux Posted August 19, 2017 Share #5 Posted August 19, 2017 When Summarit-M lens line was launched, I had some doubts in "economic Leica lens". Last year, I had one 2.5/50 for cheap and gave it a try. Some months later, I love this little but great quality lens. Now it's my favorite on M10 and Monochrom. The short throw focus is a big step from my other 50s M lenses (Noctilux or Summilux). IQ is a bit "boring" but it's uniform to be used on all subjects. In future, I'll buy some Summarit-M in 35 and/or 75/90mm to replace my heavy weight Summicron/Summilux .
Echo63 Posted August 19, 2017 Share #6 Posted August 19, 2017 I like mine. It was my first lens, bought with my M240. As others have suggested, it is a bit "soulless" - so it behaves like a modern lens - the only thing that changes with aperture is the depth of field. A good choice for a light, sharp lens
lct Posted August 19, 2017 Share #7 Posted August 19, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Great little lens. Sort of Summicron v5 with less CA and less focus shift. Only flaw it can flare badly when strong light sources are outside the frame. Better use a good hood then.
Ko.Fe. Posted August 19, 2017 Share #8 Posted August 19, 2017 It is good. Just as any good, slow lens it needs plenty of high ISO or flash if you like to take photos with it indoors. Don't know how exactly it is going to work on Monochrome in this regard. On my M-E f2.5 or f2 makes difference between grainy ISO or still clean ISO. And then I have to add flash and just using it at f5.6.
spikemozeley Posted August 19, 2017 Author Share #9 Posted August 19, 2017 After the positive response to it here I think I'll grab it. Will also get the Leica hood for it. Anyone know the model number?
TomB_tx Posted August 19, 2017 Share #10 Posted August 19, 2017 I have the Summarit 2.5 in both 35 and 50. The 35 is now my main lens on digital. The 50 2.5 is very nice - about the equal of my Summicrons in general, and I love the size and handling, but the focus throw is so short and fast I find I don't hit best focus as consistently as with the v5 Summicron. Not an issue with the 35 2.5 though. Of course, my eyes are old, so it may be me...
horosu Posted August 19, 2017 Share #11 Posted August 19, 2017 (edited) Stellar lens! The lens that HCB would use nowadays :-)). Very small and light lens, sharp into the corners, more flare resistant as every 'Cron lens (including the APO), focus throw is very fast, has a tab, all reasons for a perfect street lens. lct Posted August 19, 2017 Share #12 Posted August 19, 2017 Will also get the Leica hood for it. Anyone know the model number? 12459 Welcome, dear visitor! Per P. Posted August 20, 2017 Share #14 Posted August 20, 2017 I have the 75mm 2.5 and it is just lovely. I am not crazy about the lens shade but IMO you get exceptional value for money in Leica terms.
Abram Posted August 20, 2017 Share #15 Posted August 20, 2017 I'm using the 2.4 version of the 50 Summarit and I am happy with it but not in love with it. I'm still endlessly trying lenses trying to find the ones that seem to align with my vision. I probably should have kept the 50 Elmar-M as that was something special. Anyways, the 2.4 version is basically the same optically (As far as I understand) and the rendering is just fine. I don't like using the hood as I think it's a bit clunky to unscrew it first to have to change filters. It can indeed flare but I have to REALLY try. I'm also just generally aware of the direction of my light sources and try to keep them away from the edges of my frames. My 50 is paired with a 28 Elmarit Asph, so they're both pretty modern rendering lenses, but I'm fine with it, I like the look overall.
SunnySixteen Posted August 21, 2017 Share #16 Posted August 21, 2017 I have the 75mm 2.5 and it is just lovely. I am not crazy about the lens shade but IMO you get exceptional value for money in Leica terms. Not sure if the 75 has the same threaded shade as the 50 but I too am not thrilled with the Summarit hood on my 50 2.5. Mine does not seat firmly, always comes loose, and I have been cutting a small strip of gaff tape and running around the seam between the lens and the hood to secure it. Problem solved but a bit of an inconvenience for such an expensive piece of equipment. Otherwise I enjoy shooting with it and love the compact size and modern optics, well modern compared to the rest of my quiver.
Echo63 Posted August 21, 2017 Share #17 Posted August 21, 2017 I have a cheap ebay hood on mine - the front is threaded 52mm so i filled the vent holes with gaffa tape and cinefoil and can use my ND filters with it easily (the hood also fits my 90 tele-elmarit, and the 52mm filters also fit my voigtlander 35) Cost me less than $10 with free shipping
spikemozeley Posted August 21, 2017 Author Share #18 Posted August 21, 2017 Picked up the lens today. What a fantastic little thing. I really can't tell any difference in build quality between any of my other lenses. Very happy. Love the size!
spikemozeley Posted September 16, 2017 Author Share #19 Posted September 16, 2017 (edited) I have just noticed that there is an unusual flare showing up on some images. Its not all images and not when shooting directly into the sun but is always at the same place at the bottom of the frame. Do you think it might be something to do with use of filters? UliWer Posted September 16, 2017 Share #20 Posted September 16, 2017 It looks like a light leak of a film camera - though I am not sure whether your photo wasn't taken with a digital body.
