Kipon R and M42 to SL adapters disable auto-ISO

I just received Kipon R to SL and M42 to SL adapters. They appear to be nicely machined. They even activate the R lens code finder in the menu system. 

 

The problem is that both of the adapters seem to disable to auto-ISO function of the camera. ISO sits at 50 regardless of the lighting. Has anyone seen this behavior before or have an explanation for it?

 

If I were to use R to M and M42 to M adapters in association with the M adapter T, would I have the same problem?

I just noticed that the focal length of the R lens that I entered manually does not appear in the EXIF. There definitely seems to be a problem created by mounting these Kipon adapters on the SL.

Auto Iso function needs to know the 'identity' ( max. aperture) of the lens you are using, in all the cases  and mainly when one sets the speed 1/n xf. If those adapters don't transmit to the camera that identity, Auto Iso and sinc. speed of flash  fail. You can inform to the camera introducing manualy the identity of the Leica M lens you are using.

Francisco, I don't think that is the problem. I am entering a specific lens code manually, which includes the focal length. This is the same thing that I do for certain uncoded M-mount lenses using the M adapter T/L, which works fine.

Regardless of the cause of the malfunction, I will be returning the Kipon adapters and replacing them with a Leica R adapter M and a Rayqual M42 to M adapter. I just cannot bring myself to pay $795 for a Leica R adapter SL. I do expect Leica gear to be overpriced, but that is truly ridiculous. It's almost as though Leica are playing games with their customers, testing to see how much they are willing to pay even for simple accessories, such as adapters and lens hoods. I realize that there are basic lens reading electronics in those adapters, but electronics are very cheap these days. BTW, it's no accident that the R adapter SL costs as much as the combination of R adapter M and M adapter T/L, when it should cost about $50 more than the M -> T/L for its greater length.

 

Preaching to the choir, I know.

Well, I discovered the problem. The Kipon adapters have a white stripe where the 6-bit lens codes are normally located. When I covered the stripe with black tape, the camera behaved normally in terms of auto-ISO and manually entered lens codes. So, I guess that all white spots make the camera think that no lens is mounted.

 

I'm still returning the Kipon adapters.

You may have to blacken some part of the white strip to make it recognised by the SL as a R Adapter SL with 6 bits coding.

Yes, I'm sure that's how it works, but the adapters are already on their way back to Adorama.
