Small lens for ZF street, 28?

I'm looking for a relatively inexpensive (but I want to hear want the relative expensive ones are too) lens to stop down and use for zone focusing street photography, I'm an IQ fiend so that's definitely something to consider - stopping lenses to F8 does not make them equal, I tried that with a Canon 40mm 2.8 pancake lens, and did not like the sharpness at F8 compared to a zeiss lens I had.

 

I'm used to 28mm as of late with my Leica Q, but I'm willing to explore other options if suggested.

 

any recommended M lenses?

The Voigtlander 28/3.5 Color-Skopar and the Leica 28/2.8 Elmarit ASPH are two good options, the Leica is of course a bit more expensive but then again "relatively inexpensive " is relative phrase :)

 

I wanted to try and keep it below £1000 (already spent my budget on other lenses) - but i will look out for a deal on the elmarit

I suggest you look for a 35 Summaron, it's excellent for zone focusing street. Who uses a 28mm anyway?!

 

Nah, 28 isn't wide enough. The 3.8/24 is the best Leica lens ever. It'll blow your socks off!

 

24 isn't wide! The 3.4/21 is the bees knees of lenses!

Some people use 28mm and some other focal lengths.

Winogrand is no more with us anymore.

He wouldn't read and answer in this forum anyway, so occupied to produce his thousands of "unseen/neverseen" negatives.

Maybe the first to "popularize 28mm on M4" ?

How about an MS Optics 2/28?

Body-cap size and whilst not all that sharp @ ƒ/2, by ƒ/8 should run with the usual steeds. About £800 or so.

 

In re: CV 3,5/28; less than the specified £1000 but hard to find.

In re: Leica 28 Elmarit, probably just beyond that budget. 

 

How about a Ricoh GR? Pocketable in its own right.

Just noticed this..

 

I've actually had a Ricoh GR, and was not satisfied with the ISO handling and image quality.

 

I also have a Leica Q which I mentioned in the first post too, which surpasses the Ricoh GR in many ways - except for it's pocket-ability :) 

 

I will compare my usage of the leica q vs 28mm f2.8 summarit for street and decide upon a winner :)

Yeah, it would make much better reading if people wrote about things they knew nothing about.

I guess the following sounds very intelligent to you, then:

 

-Jim: hey forum, I'm new to Leica. I want the best 35mm lens for my Leica M10. What do you recommend?

 

-Tom: nikon f2.5 with amedeo adapter. No sense to spend thousands of dollars for any other lens, you won't see a difference at f8 anyways.

You don't want to let reality get in the way of a good yarn, like that time I was shooting street next to HCB and he told me that he actually hated using a 50mm lens and that Leica forced him too. You see after the M2 was released, sales of 50mm lenses took a nosedive and they still had loads of 50mm summiluxes to sell. Why do you think that lens stayed in production for so long! He also said that he much preferred a 24mm lens and that he had been calling Walter for years asking for one. My German is a bit rusty though so that might not be true :D
