jimleicam3 Posted August 8, 2017 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I pulled the trigger on the SL but will only be using my M glass. I am going on a trip to Canada soon and am looking for a great landscape lens. Right now I only own a 35 cron and 50 Lux. Any advice on the 21 mm would be great, I know that other threads have been posted on wide glass with the SL, however, I am really interested in this one lens. Thanks, Jim
Advertisement Posted August 8, 2017 Posted August 8, 2017 Hi jimleicam3, Take a look here SL with Super-Elmar M 21 mm. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
LeicaR10 Posted August 9, 2017 Share #2 Posted August 9, 2017 (edited) Jimleicam3, I use the 21mm Super-Elmar quite extensively for creating fine art landscape images. My clients are amazed at the color and detail rendering created by the lens. I use this lens with the M10 and SL. The lens is superb, has high resolving power, minimal field curvature, CA and flare are essentially nonexistent. It is considered one of the very best WA M lenses made and for the aforementioned reasons. Excellent choice IMO and pairs well with your 35 Cron and 50 Lux. r/ Mark Edited August 9, 2017 by LeicaR10
trickness Posted August 9, 2017 Share #3 Posted August 9, 2017 I recently picked up this lens for my 240 MP and have been absolutely blown away by it. I was concerned that it was not fast enough, and that is by no means a Summilux, but I just have learned to use it differently. The depth of field is so generous on this lens that for portraiture it really becomes point and shoot with little or no rangefinder focusing required. You can of course mess around with perspective if you get really close to things in the foreground, but I've actually got some pretty great portraits without grotesque distortions once I got a feel for the lens. And the sharpness is unbelievable on the SEM. I love it as much as my 50mm 1.4 Summilux Asph M, and that is saying quite a lot. From what I have read the corners might be a little less sharp on the SL than on an M body, but it isn't too bad. This is just a stunning lens and I can't imagine anyone being unhappy with it, unless you want something faster which of course is going to be heavier and larger.
jimleicam3 Posted August 9, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted August 9, 2017 Never, Do you find that you use your SL more or less than you M10? I went with the SL because I was finding that with the range finder I was having trouble with spot on focus. Thanks for your advice. Jim You ought to have sent (all) the lenses and the M for adjustment together.
jimleicam3 Posted August 9, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted August 9, 2017 I did send them back to NJ. However, I feels that my eyesight, which is not too bad could benefit from a new viewfinder. Thanks for your help

I purchased the 21SEM when I had the M9 and I was quickly impressed by the lens. So I thought replacing it with a 21 lux would be great. I did that. Although I enjoy my 21 Lux but I still miss the 21SEM whenever I look at the blown up prints on my wall, I still miss the lens.
jplomley Posted August 10, 2017 Share #8 Posted August 10, 2017 My 28 Cron Asph v2 is better in the corners than the 21 SEM. I find the 21 SEM performs better on my MM1. I will probably purchase the 16-35 SL lens when it eventually hits the market, whenever that is. Seems lenses are delayed for the SL for some reason. rafael_macia Posted August 10, 2017 Share #9 Posted August 10, 2017 The 21 Super Elmar is a terrific lens. I think it is equal to the best lenses ever produced by Leica. Super sharp, light, with a 46mm front ? In my mind Leica outdid themselves with this one ! Enjoy it on the SL !
