At lunch I wander around Seattle, often talking to some of the homeless people.  The old stereotypes of drug addled or mental deficiency are unfortunately often true, however a growing number of them are "normal" working class citizens who have been displaced due to bad luck. This could take the form of a work stopping injury, loss of job through no fault of their own, divorce (frequently the case for women), etc.  Some are too proud to seek assistance from Gov't programs and others are actually working menial jobs saving to put a security deposit on an apartment and some have just resigned themselves to their fate.

Most of the time they are very happy someone acknowledges them and wished them a good day.
