Q or 28mm lens?

I thought I can use the Q instead of buying a 28mm lens but so far I have found myself picking up the M10 and making do with either 35 or 50 instead.

Perhaps this will change one the glow of the honeymoon has worn off. Has it worked out that way for anyone?

I did buy the current 28 Summicron before I received my M10, but then I found a mint 35 1.4 Distagon and haven't really refitted the 28. Comparing images Q versus M262/Summicron I rather preferred colours with the M then. But I am wondering whether or not to keep the Summicron or put some money back into my account!

i had the q in my hands for a couple of minutes. it just didnt hit me. i felt the focus to be too slow and the fact that lenses dont change on the q too limiting.

trading the q for a 28 summicron sounds reasonable for me, when an M10 is already there.

or get it this way: what would the Q do for you, that the M wouldn't?

Pick up a 28 for the M10.

Of course this comes from a 28mm junkie.  I own nine different 28mm Leica lenses spanning f/1.4 to f/5.6.  Probably my favorite is the 28/2.8/Asph/v1, which can be found for around $1500, although the 28/2.8/III can be found for half of that and renders nicely too.

Oh, and yes, I owned the Q for a decent period of time, a little over a year, but I am also an OVF junkie and only an M will do.

Reassuring to hear that I'm leaning the right direction ; I'm thinking of buying the latest 28mm Elmarit-m. If money isn't a consideration, I'll probably find it hard to resist the f1.4 though.

The Elmarit 28mm Elmarit f2.8 is a "jewel" of a lens. I own one as well as the Summicron F2. The Elmarit's the favourite, I love it's compact size on a M body.

I also own the Q, and I have no problems with that camera in regards to it's AF, it's fast and accurate enough for me plus the lens renders beautifully.

I'm keeping all my 28mm options, the M lenses and the Q.

I have both the 28 Summicron and the Q. The Summicron renders very beautifully. I also find the Q's AF lightning fast. On my first digital trip for a few years I carried the M240 with a 50 Summicron and the Q with its 28/1.7. I found the Q to be a very versatile travel camera with its touch screen focus and shoot capability as well as its macro facility. I'm really amazed someone could comment on its AF being slow, really surprised! I wouldn't want such an inaccurate misleading statement to put off anyone interested in a Q. Incidentally, misleading comments caused me to buy 5 batteries for the Q because forums had lead me to believe it was power hungry. Three or even two would've been fine for me.

That said, on an upcoming trip I'll be taking the M240 with the 50 and 28 summicrons for weight and space considerations.

Whenever I think about trading my Q for an M lens, I recall the macro shooting capability of the Q. I use it a lot that way with flower macro photography, tripod, and precise focus point capability.

While I am disappointed in high ISO images with the Q, the final image with ISO 100, tripod use, f/8 and a 2-second auto shutter release gives me amazing Q flower macro photographs. The lens is awesome.

I sold my 28mm Elmarit a while ago and use he 'Q' as my solution for that focal length. Couldn't be happier. I use a 35 on the M10 and either a WATE or a 21mm Summilux for ultra wide shots, but for in between Independ on the 'Q'. Yes, it is physically larger than a 28 lens would be, but you get an 'M' quality image with really nice controls, a beautiful built-in lens, some macro capabilities, a leaf shutter for when noise is an issue, lightning fast autofocus, and a backup body that still has ample resolution for most purposes even when cropped to 50mm all for a price that's not much greater than a lens alone. Works well for me.

If you have an M10 already, why would you get a Q just to shoot 28mm when you can get a 28mm lens for the M10? That's a no brainer. The 28mm lens could be used on a future M too, the Q will become obsolete one day. I would also say that the Q isn't a true 28mm lens, it's more like a 26mm. I would suggest getting the summaron 28mm f5.6 pancake lens unless you need to shoot in darkness and then I would get the 28mm Summilux.

I would definitely get the Q over a 28mm lens for the M. In fact, that's exactly what I did for myself. I have a 16-21 mm, two different 21mm lenses, and then I jump to 35mm. The Q provides much more than just a 28mm focal length. It also provides a backup camera, auto focus, and some basic macro capabilities.

I can use the Q one handed, I can shoot wide open at 1.7 blindly and/or whilst walking and still get the shot - both are useful to me for a lot of applications street/weddings included.

However I did buy the 28mm elmarit to see if I might try zone focusing with it at F8 for street, whilst I can adapt this to the SL - really just waiting for the M10 before I use it.

I took all these portraits at Comic Con, on the open floors - with the Leica Q in one hand and a flash in the other - close focusing, face AF - all made this possible. So whilst I'm always looking for that greener grass, I'm not sure I could let it go
