Magnification with joystick for M lenses use

Hi all,

 

Just received a SL body with the VE 24-90 lens and the TL-M adapter 2 days ago. So happy, and so glad to easily manually focus wide open my wonderful M lenses despite I wear glasses. This viewfibder is really brilliant !

 

I anyway still have one question. Focus assist allows to magnify when clicking the joystick. But it is either max magnification (6x) or no magnification. When using the bottom left BL button, you can have a "cycle" with no magnification, 3x and 6x. Isn't there a way to have the same with the joystick ?

 

Note that I updated the body FW to version 3.0.

There is no way to do that with the current firmware. Whether there can be at some time in the future remains to be seen.

I assume it would be quite easy to implement with a FW update. But it is true as well that it is quite easy to focus wide opened lenses like 50 lux, 75 AA or 90 on the SL using this feature. I think I will really love this camera with both SL, M and R lenses. This isprobably the perfect synthesis, which may make me eventually selling my M-P 240. I will wait winter to decide.

 

Only drawback at this time is lack of longer AF lens > 400 mm for my wildlife capture practice. It would then allow me to get rid of my Canon gear...

I don't know why everyone seems to think this. It's not true. I worked with engineering teams writing code for updates and such for most of my career in high tech (over 25 years) and I can't think of a time when it was ever "quite easy" to deliver what seemed a simple fix. Writing good software is hard work; that's why good software engineers are paid well.

Just because the procedure (routine of set actions) is already defined for the bottom left button. This is a question of "address"; to replicate and attach an existing routine to another button is not a big deal.

Moreover, the bottom left button is a lot more customizable than the joystick, essentially with the possibility to assign specific functions pending you press once or twice, briefly or longly.

 

And by the way, I am also working since more than 20 years in high tech. And I do not deny the need to well pay good software engineers

 

The true question is indeed whether what I described is a "must have" or just a "nice to have". It is finally working well this way; I played with it all day long, and find it relevant with focusing wide open M lenses longer than 50 mm.
