By my calcs, that lens+adapter would protrude 25mm compared to the 37mm protrusion of the TL 23mm, excluding hoods. Does that look about right?

As you can't use the lens cap with the hood, mostly the hood stays at home. 23mm equivalent fov - 34.5mm which is fine if you like 35mm. 28mm equivalent is 42mm, which I prefer (particularly as I have the 11-23mm zoom as well ...)

 

Also, this isn't AF. The depth of field is such that wihin reason you can leave the focus tab locked off.

Is there a cover/pouch/bag out there, *TIGHTLY* fitting TL+a small lens+viewfinder? I guess many options exist for the TL+smallish lens, but I am more uncertain about the situation with the viewfinder attached to the body...

 

Typical use of the cover would be to protect/store the body when cycling, working, attending meetings, etc.

 

I could of course put the camera in a jacket pocket etc., but the viewfinder destroys the slimness. To attach/detatch the viewfinder is not a working situation, I believe.

 

Any views/experiences/suggestions on the TL+small lens+viewfinder combo based on the above?

If the depth of field is so wide, you hardly need to focus, so EVF can be left off. Excellent choice. My problem is I don't have this lens and have stopped collecting glass! But, great idea.

I hadn't thought of this - what a cracking idea, and the summaron is such a lovely little lens (even more so if you crop the edges a bit!.

I'll definitely be giving it a go - in pocket for horse riding at f8 with infinity locked - brilliant!

Thanks Jono. I think it will be a winner. I have a rope strap (with the TL lugs) for when I need it, but most of the time it goes into my pocket without the strap.

 

MarkP has a point, though. Even though I don't need to focus, I keep wanting to bring the camera up to my eye. Old habits die hard ...

I've been thinking about this quite a bit, along with the TL2 and smartphones.

I need contacts/glasses for near vision, but not for distance. To all intents and purposes 2m is far away enough to count as distance, so I don't need any help to use a OVF/EVF. I can manage a rear screen to frame and compose with varifocals or progressive contacts, but neither are great for accurate fine focusing. Either I need better glasses/contacts or I have to accept that I would only use the TL2 for precise manual focusing with the EVF.

I'm in the same position.

 

Remember that you get 6x magnification with M lenses on by rotating the left wheel (this is effective), and with the Summaron mounted, the depth of field is so huge, you don't really see anything out of focus ...

Interesting question, Joris.  It's early days yet (I seem to spend more time working than getting out and taking photos).

 

Conceptually, both are 24MP, but the TL2 covers a smaller area - arguably, this means better resolution cropped to the same dimensions.  Both uncropped, using the same lens and same settings, I have no reason to believe that there is any difference in image quality.  I have yet to see any suggestion that there is.  The decision then becomes whether I want wider with full frame using the SL (which is my preference), or smaller and lighter with longer reach with the TL2 (which is APS-C) which would suggest using the smaller M lenses like the 28 Summaron and Summarit 50/2.  

 

As I have the 21-28-50-75 Summiluxes and the Noctilux, the 28 Summaron and 50 Summitar are the natural choices with the TL2, giving me effective focal lengths of 42mm and 75mm in a small package.  A nice enough compact, two lens combination.  I could add the 21 Summilux (31.5mm field of view), but that's not really my favourite focal length and it is bulky.  If I wish to go wider, I take the 11-23mm TL zoom.

 

In terms of image quality using M lenses, as the TL2 crops the centre of the lens image circle, with 24MP, the results have been good.  MTF charts showing drop off  towards the edges and corners are pretty much irrelevant, and vignetting isn't an issue.

 

It's a lovely little camera, but I see it as a backup to the SL and a walk around camera.  I see no point putting it on a tripod or anything like that (though I'm sure people will), unless I'm looking to extend the reach of my 90-280mm SL zoom. The way I see it, the SL, M and TL2 are all part of an extended system.

 

The only TL lens I'm considering (not this year) is the 35 Summilulx-TL (field of view 52.5mm - a focal length I like) as it would be nice to have one high quality native prime for it.

With M glass, if you set aside the change of the field of view with the TL2 I would imagine the T would be so much more pleasant with the smaller weight and size. Even with the EVF. Even without focus peaking I found it quite good on the 'T'.

I agree.

It begs the question about where a suggested TL with built-in EVF would fit in. In size terms it would be close to an M - and I'm sure an EVF alternative to the M with an L-mount is coming somewhere down the line.

I can see why Leica chose to stick with an add-on EVF for the T in order to keep the size down.
